KnowledgeTree Spreads Its ECM Through Open Tech Channel

KnowledgeTree Spreads Its ECM Through Open Tech ChannelKnowledgeTree  (news, site) is joining Open Tech and taking their document management software to thousands of resellers worldwide.

Open Tech is a new channel created by Tech Data, an IT products distributor. It is designed to support open source ISVs, like KnowledgeTree, by helping them market and sell their solutions to a worldwide market.

KnowledgeTree sees this an opportunity to reach out to resellers who spend their time with customers — SMBs, enterprises, government — who want to use open source solutions.

“Interest in open source will continue to grow as resellers and end users become more aware of open source solutions like KnowledgeTree’s document management software,” said Tech Data Vice President, Software Product Marketing Stacy Nethercoat. “Through Open Tech, Tech Data will work closely with KnowledgeTree to educate resellers and enable them to profitably deliver these solutions to their customers.”

Are the days coming — or are they already here — when we don't have to think of open source separate from proprietary? Do we really need to differentiate between the two? Or can a solution be sold simply on the merits of its functionality alone? Maybe it's too late in the day to have this discussion — what do you think?

Gilbane Acquired by Analyst Firm Outsell

gilbane_logo_2009.jpgOne of the most known analyst firms — the Gilbane Group (news, site) — has been on the research and consulting market since 1987. Today marks another historical point for the firm – their acquisition by Outsell, Inc., a younger analyst company that was founded in 1998. The transaction between the two started at a breakfast meeting one day and has been in discussions for the past 5 years. We talked to Frank Gilbane, who gave us some insight into the merger.

DotNetNuke Adds $8 million in Funding to the Development Pool

DotNetNuke Offers New Editions, Developer Support for Web CMSDotNetNuke (news, site) is having a little party today to celebrate the landing of US$ 8 million in additional Series B funding for their open source .NET web content management platform.

The financing, led by new investor UV Partners and including August Capital and Sierra Ventures (existing investors), will — of course — help fund product development and marketing and sales initiatives.

2009 was a strong year for DotNetNuke, with a new version of their Web CMS platform, a revamped partner program, the launching of their commercial edition(s) and the acquisition of Snowcovered (catch all the news here).

With this additional funding, we should expect even more things from the open source company this year, even though as President and CEO Navin Nagiah says, they didn't really need the money:

DotNukeNuke had phenomenal market traction during our first year. We signed nearly 500 customers for our subscription products and closed nearly 40,000 transactions to 15,000 customers on Snowcovered.com, our online marketplace for third party add-ons. While we did not need capital given our revenue traction, we liked the partnership and the terms so we decided to close a new round. We welcome and look forward to working with UV Partners.

Need it or not, the funding will go a long way to expanding the existing platform and perhaps a move into new markets. We want to know what they will spend on the money on exactly. Come on DotNetNuke, leak the roadmap!

Eclipse Plug ins Help Build Apps for the Oracle Fusion Middleware Platform

logo-oracle.gif Underlining what it says is its commitment to open source communities and developers, Oracle (news, site) has just announced the release of a new enterprise pack consisting of a number of certified plug-ins that enable developers to build Java EE and Web Services applications for the Oracle Fusion Middleware platform.

The new Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse supports development with technologies including Database, Java SE, Java EE, Web Services, XML and the Spring Framework, and comes with a new feature called AppXRay, which allows Java developers to work in team settings and reduces run time debugging and code quality.

The bottom line, Oracle says, is that this new pack will provide for shorter, faster release cycles that better keep pace with the underlying open source Eclipse platform, or more simply put — higher quality development in less time.

And the benefits? There are four main ones including:

  • Enables WebLogic developers to combine their expertise in Eclipse with the capabilities of Oracle Fusion Middleware.
  • It is enterprise ready and includes capabilities that enable the development, assembly, build, deployment, debugging and testing of Java SE, Java EE, Web Service, ORM and Spring applications.
  • It plugs into your existing Eclipse app, preserving configuration and customization work.
  • Supports multiple platform revisions.

This new enterprise pack is available already, but if you want to find out more you can check out this introductory video, or download it from the Oracle website.
