SDL Acquires Translation Management Provider Idiom

SDL acquires translation mgt company

Global Information Management Solution Provider SDL has announced the acquisition of Idiom Technologies Inc for $21.7m USD (£11.1m*) plus $4.9m USD (£2.5m*) worth of debt and working capital.

Founded in 1998, Idiom Technologies Inc. provides Translation management systems as Software as a Service (SaaS). Their product WorldServer is used by over 60 leading global companies worldwide.

This acquisition will help SDL produce content management solutions with highly efficient translation management functionality. It will add a number of new customers to SDL’s own customer base, and increase their consultancy, sales and development expertise.

Mark Lancaster, Chairman and Chief Executive of SDL, commented, “In today’s competitive landscape, global trade is an imperative that companies should not ignore. SDL and Idiom both provide solutions that help companies manage global information. We feel that the market has reached a stage where Global Information Management is now acknowledged as a key ingredient for any large global company that manages global content across their multilingual, multicultural customer base. We feel that we can best address this expanding need by combining the resources of SDL and Idiom to provide a single solution with compatibility across the supply chain, now and in the future…”

This isn’t SDL first trip to the acquisition room. In May 2007 they acquired Tridion a web content management vendor for EU€ 69 million.

According to the Gilbane Group, this acquisition will have a great influence on the impact of integrating workflows and should bring more focus on the Global Content Lifecycle.

At Gilbane Boston 2007, globalization was a key topic of discussion:

“organizations that understand the impact of multilingual communications on efficiency, brand, and revenue are moving globalization strategies upstream to “bake in” quality at source content creation”.
