His London-based company, James T Noble & Associates, has worked with some of the world's largest brands and companies — Disney, Microsoft, 20th Century Fox, Virgin, Coca-Cola and MTV — to market their products and services online. And he boasts impressive results. "Typically, the clients we take on see their businesses grow two to four times within 12 to 18 months."

What does it take to grow a business? Several things: best-in-class marketing execution. Solid business coaching. Oh, and Twitter helps, too. But you have to know how to use it.

Making the Most of Twitter

Noble thought it was time to dispel some of the myths about Twitter. So he asked his in-house team of researchers and illustrators to collaborate on something many businesses may not even have known they needed. He calls it a Twitter Cheat Sheet.

"We wanted to take a balanced view of Twitter's true contribution to B2B sales. It does have a valuable part to play, but it's not perfect for every business.

It was also important for us to convey that Twitter isn't something you can necessarily manage like your other media. It's an interactive and (rapidly becoming) visual platform that's most active at typically non-business hours. So it requires special handling. But if businesses get it right, they can connect with customers and evangelists in a way that's difficult to do at scale on any other platform."

Forget about all those complicated technical tips you may have heard. Twitter isn't difficult to master, Noble said.

You just need to be consistent, and you just need to be human."

All those companies that act robotically, try to capitalize on the latest global tragedy or waste the time of their clients or customers with pointless banter … they have it wrong. To succeed on Twitter, a business has to be authentic.

Be sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. Ask and answer meaningful questions. Offer worthwhile contributions to conversations and debates. And follow the other suggestions on this nicely done Twitter Cheat Sheet.
