It seems as if Google is out to make life easier for its users as Gmail gets a new look with tabbed email sorting functionality for those that are struggling to keep a lid on their inbox, while a new mobile admin app for Android devices has also been released.

The concept is not exactly re-designing the wheel, but with email management becoming an increasingly difficult enterprise issue, anything that will help is going to be welcome.

Email Communications

Despite the growth of social networks and the use of social media in the enterprise, email is still the primary way to communicate between enterprises and their customers, between colleagues, and even between friends. The result -- an inbox that is barely manageable.

With the new functionality however, Google says, this will all become very much easier. According to a Gmail blog post by Itamar Gilad, Product Manager with Gmail, the new inbox that is available for both desktops and mobiles will enable users to categorize different types of email.

Tabbed Categories

Users only have to choose what categories they want to use and how to apply them to the inbox. Your inbox contents become visible in such a way as to indicate what content, and what kind of content is new, leaving it to the user to decide what emails you want to see and access immediately.

The categories include Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums.

  • Primary is the for content your absolutely don’t want to miss
  • Social pulls together Twitter, Facebook and other social networks you are receiving notifications from
  • Promotions contains different purchases available to you
  • Forums keeps emails from any forums or listservs you belong to.

You can chose all 5, a selection of the 5, or none at all if you want to stick with your inbox the way it is.

In Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail for iPhone and iPad apps, you'll see your Primary mail when you open the app and you can easily navigate to the other tabs.

This new function is not available immediately to everyone, but will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, mobile users however, should see the updates in the coming weeks.

Admin for Android

In a separate announcement but also related to keeping the working environment organized, Google has also announced the release of a new Admin console for Google Apps administrators.

Google Admin for Android devices enables administrators to carry out common tasks from their Android devices that include suspending users, resetting passwords, managing groups or calling and emailing specific users.

Keep in mind that this is only for administrators that have API access as the API is needed to enable it. The new app can be downloaded from Google Play.
