SaaS vs. In-House DAM - Which is Right For You?

The choice between cloud-based and in-house DAM used to be easy. Between the high cost of cloud storage and bandwidth, and the limited capabilities of SaaS (software as a service) solutions — the argument for in-house DAM was clear.

Cost is no longer the sole determining factor. Cloud computing and storage costs have lowered in the last few years, making SaaS a viable choice for many organizations. SaaS DAM vendors have responded to customer needs by offering new features and functionality that directly compete with the capabilities of in-house solutions — such as integration tools for social media — which places them squarely on the competitive playing field.

Lost in the DAM

Lost in the DAMOften surprising to digital asset management (DAM) newcomers is that it can be easier to lose files inside a DAM than it is to lose files that aren't inside the DAM. Worse, the ways in which your content can become “digitally lost” in a DAM don’t require such notable events as equipment failures, thefts or destruction. This article covers some less obvious DAM considerations that lead to DAM users not being able to find the content they need.

Want to Move SharePoint Data to Office 365? Find a Vendor #SPC14

As Microsoft unraveled its long-tangled plans to integrate Office365 and SharePoint this week, one big question remains: How will legacy data move from existing on premises files into the cloud?

Data migration vendors once feared the folks in Redmond would develop an in-house solution.  But now it appears Microsoft will encourage its customers to choose a third-party vendor — and the vendors are poised to reap the harvest.

At this week's SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft executives spent almost the entire first day singing the praises of the marriage of Office365 and SharePoint. Soon, you'll be able to add maps in Outlook messages, collaborate on files in Yammer groups and switch seamlessly between Office apps, finding the documents you want in a flash on any computer where you sign into your Microsoft account. As Jared Spataro, general manager for Microsoft's Office division, noted, Office365 has grown into a $1.5 billion business for the software giant, and its growth is accelerating with this announcement.

Brandworkz Adds BI Dashboard to DAM

Digital marketing is driven by data, and every component in marketing is increasingly enhanced by data analysis. The offering, part of a partnership with Differentia Consulting, uses performance data from the cloud-based DAM platform and issues an audit trail and analytics through a single view of assets, marketing activities and campaigns.

Rob Koplowitz remembers it well: that time a decade ago when document management was considered a "non-sexy technology." Thanks to the new emphasis on social business, those days are behind us now.

"Over the course of the last eight years I've been with Forrester, we've seen that completely slip on its head," said Koplowitz, a vice president and principal analyst for the technology research house. "Everything has changed so dramatically."

Koplowitz reviewed the reasons for that change on Feb. 19 in a webinar that also featured Marci Maddox, senior director for product marketing and customer experience management at OpenText.

Why Images Don't Belong in Your DAM

Why Images Don't Belong in Your DAMMost organizations use digital asset management to manage images. It has always been this way and it will likely continue to be this way for some time. After all, images are the thing DAM does best.

CMSWire Top Contributors 2013 - David Diamond

ddiamond.jpgNot many companies would be brave enough to hire a man who writes arguments about why not to buy its software. But David Diamond speaks the truth about digital asset management (DAM) — the good, the bad and the ugly. The DAM he writes of is an aspirational DAM, the one whose promise brought him to the industry, the one he still believes in and the one he pushes the industry to deliver. And by writing about it with humor, in plain, jargon-free language, he wins some champions of his cause along the way.

We're just happy for us (if not for him) that he always breaks his New Year's resolution.

A Look Back: DAM Trends from 2013

Many questions

DAM, it’s that time of year again – to look backward at the soon-to-be-ancient-history of the past year in digital asset management (DAM).

It's a broad topic. DAM refers to the rules and processes an organization puts in place to manage, retrieve and distribute their digital media, such as photos, videos, PDFs, presentations and documents. It's more than an asset repository, though. DAM provides support for key workflows such as approval loops and virtual collaboration that add value to their media assets.

So let's take a look at some key trends.
