Cisco Acquires Office Collaboration Provider Versly
Cisco has just announced that it is acquiring two-year old startup Versly, which provides a tool that allows users to collaborate inside of Microsoft Office.
Cisco, positioned as a "strong performer" in the recent Forrester Wave report on Enterprise Social Platforms, has been focused on collaboration for some time.
The company is continuing its efforts to expand its collaboration offerings with the acquisition of Versly. Versly provides a plugin, which appears to still be in private beta, that allows users to share, collaborate, track revisions and merge Microsoft Office content in applications such as Word and PowerPoint.
According to Cisco representatives, Versly's technology will be integrated into a number of Cisco collaboration products like Cisco Jabber, Cisco Quad and Cisco Web Ex. Interested in more?
Adobe’s PDFs on iPad
With iOS the current ‘Daddy’ of mobile operating systems, it was only a matter of time before Adobe looked at new ways of cashing in on the consumer interest — and spending — around the iPhone and iPad.
This week, it has announced that its CreatePDF app for Android that enables users creates PDFs from files on the Android, will now work with iOS.
There won’t be a lot of difference with the Android version and just like it, CreatePDF for iOS uses Adobe's website to do the conversion work.
The PDFs created will be exactly like the original files and the app supports all the main document file formats including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator and Photoshop.
It has also said that it will soon launch a pre-release version of Reader for the iPad. CreatePDF, is already available from the App Store and it's cheap.
TouchPad's New Doc Editing Capabilities
HP has been in the news a lot lately with one of the big stories that it won’t be doing any more work on TouchPad hardware.
It will probably come as some relief to owners of a TouchPad that at least some are still working on the software.
The HP TouchPad shipped with Quickoffice HD for viewing Office documents, with a promised future update that would enable editing/creating of Word and Excel documents.
Quickoffice has now released that update to include document editing. With it, Quickoffice HD users can create or edit Word documents or Excel spreadsheets on the TouchPad as well as a few other things that they haven’t been able to do to date.
Some of the options that come with the update version include many of the editing functions that you would expect with an office suite, among them the ability to change font types, color, italics and cell formatting in Excel.
