Is Ning The Next Facebook or MySpace?

Ning,social networking

Social network sites like MySpace and Facebook started an infectious desire from the public for more social-ness on the internet. The people were tired of chat rooms and IM just wasn’t cutting it. So the social network crazy started.

But MySpace and Facebook aren't the only social networks out there…

With the evolution of Web 2.0, social network sites began popping up all over the place. But none quite like this one…

Social Networking with Ning

Ning is an online platform for users to create their own social websites and social networks. It hopes to compete with other social networks like MySpace and Facebook. The unique feature of Ning is that anyone can create their own custom social network for a particular topic or need, catering to specific audiences.

They offer a single customizable template aimed at allowing non-developers to more easily customize their copy of the social website. Ning does allow developers to have some source level control of their social networks, enabling them to change features and underlying logic.

Ning has announced support for the OpenSocial API that Google announced in late 2007. Developers will be able to run OpenSocial gadgets within their networks.

So if you’re looking for an easy to use alternative that doesn’t involve having to get a new hosting account, then Ning is your thing.

Getting Set Up With Ning

Getting set up with Ning is simple. Just visit www.Ning.com and click on the “Get a Ning ID” tab to get started. Once you have an account set up they provide a number of tutorials and references to help out with customization and configuration.

Another alternative is to find a freelancer. When looking for freelancers make sure you get someone with experience in what you’re looking for and can provide working, published examples at the aforementioned places.

Ning sites are hosted with Ning, which results in a www.YourSite.ning.com url, but they also offer a url masking feature for $5.00 that will eliminate the .ning from the url (result: www.YourSite.com).

And with features like blogs, video, audio and almost anything else you want including mini-forums, you now have a social networking powerhouse at your fingertips.

Will Ning Compete?

According to Ning CEO, Gina Bianchini: “Nearly 30,000 applications have been created to date, up from less than 5,000 a year ago. Page views have been spiking, reaching 20 million per month, 20x traffic a year ago. Unique visitors have reached nearly 5 million per month as well, 10x a year ago.”

And that was a year ago…

Ning seems geared to give the big boys a run for their money. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I think the key to social media success (and the next phase) is a move into the niches, which is precisely what Ning's platform affords. And, it's easy to set up and use. Another key to success.

While Facebook groups can be useful, Ning takes it to the next level. As an example, check out www.theswom.com.

While I don't think it's a competitor for MySpace and Facebook, it is a valuable social networking site. However, I'd place it within it's own category.

i think its gonna be the next big thing because of its features.

I think its pretty cool the way they've setup their platform. Its also cool how you dont have to pay for a host and for only $5 it allows you to take off the .ning allowing your url to look like yours

I don't use Facebook or MySpace at all but I'd created my own site (i don't like term 'network') on Ning and it's beautiful thing. Really. So I see Ning beating 'fixed' social networks in near future… It's real web 3.0 :-)

I just launched my site for graduates of my training school yesterday. Invited members are signing up in droves. I love it and can't wait to see how I can leverage it best to my advantage.

I believe if the right people put the right time into ning it can be a successful competitor with myspace and facebook.

The most famous site in my country is Sotia Central, which is run by Ning. So there we have it…Ning rules!!!

It is a NEW YEAR, and I am back to say that NING is better than Facebook or My Space. I'm still hooked on Ning!

I learned about Ning in 2008 when I joined a more focused topic than could work in a Yahoo group: Apronista. Haven't set one up myself but am seriously thinking about it in the last half of 2009 when I have more time to develop the idea and a site. Thanks for the article.

Ning is a dirty company that takes member data from its paying clients.

Great article! I, too, believe Ning will become bigger and better than Facebook. Working on my social now…

No I think that Yuwie will be the next Facebook or Myspace because it pays people to do the same things we do on facebook and myspac… Gota try it out nothing to lose alot to gain!

I disagree. I don't think Ning will be the next myspace/facebook. Not everyone wants to create their own site and have to deal with choosing their own layout, colors, content, etc. People just want to connect. Besides the applications, Facebook became popular because of it's simplicity (No CSS knowledge required). However, I do believe that there will be a new social networking website that will replace Facebook/Myspace in a couple of years.

Ning is absolutely not another facebook and myspace. The reason is simple, Ning just make those social functions a bit simpler (without crowded app inviting messages in walls) but not unique. The self customize template can be found even in friendster.
