LiveMesh Wins Best Tech Innovation at 2008 Crunchies

LiveMesh, released earlier this year by Microsoft and still in beta, picked up a major award at the 2008 Crunchies. Amidst a flurry of start-ups, new “2.0” services and power house competition, it was a little surprising to see LiveMesh win the Best Technology Innovation Crunchie. Is the award enough to sway skeptical bloggers’ opinions about the enterprise 2.0 synchronization and collaboration system?

LiveMesh was awarded Best Technology Innovation at The 2008 Crunchies. The contest is co-hosted by GigaOm, VentureBeat, Silicon Alley Insider, and TechCrunch (hence the name Crunchies). Categories at this year’s awards included Best Application or Service, Best Tech Innovation, Best Design and more. Check here for a complete list.

LiveMesh Beats Out Google and Facebook

LiveMesh is a data synchronization system brought out by Microsoft earlier this year. It allows files and folders to be shared and synchronized across multiple devices.  The video below (requires Microsoft Silverlight), courtesy of on10.net gives a good overview of the platform.

With a total of 16 categories at this year's Crunchies and solutions like Google FriendConnect and Chrome, Twitter, Amazon Web Services, MySpace Music, and Facebook Connect circulating in the finalist’s area, it was a huge achievement for LiveMesh to have won Best Tech Innovation of 2008.

Bloggers Speculate About the Win

Despite the level of this award and the achievement it spells for LiveMesh, some bloggers are concerned that the win may be a little unfounded. Emil Protalinski, of Ars Technica says, “Sure, it's available on Windows, Windows Mobile, and Mac, likely with plans for more platforms, but really it still is a work-in-progress. In my opinion at least, Live Mesh isn't quite ready to be receiving awards.”

Not everyone is feeling the win was unfounded however. According to blogger Jeff Henshaw of The Hog Blog, "it’s a sign of the startup mentality that is taking hold at Microsoft: a mentality that has the net at the center of a new platform, with deep connectivity built into every experience that people have. Being recognized amongst this group of innovate entrepreneurs and cutting edge services is a testament to the great product and the team behind it."

With over 350 votes being cast, it is truly surprising that LiveMesh won out over such highly publicized and discussed solutions like Google Chrome, Google Friend Connect, Yahoo BOSS and Facebook Connect. Maybe it just goes to show that the squeaky wheel doesn't always get the grease.

Look for LiveMesh to continue to be in the news with bigger and better things to come in 2009.
