My absolute favorite tool of the Enterprise Architect as he or she navigates amongst the sea of paradoxes that face them as they identify and stitch together the packaged, open, and custom solutions that make up the modern enterprise is the good old-fashioned “bake off”. It’s also sometimes referred to as the “beauty pageant”, but this metaphor doesn’t work for me as a well designed bake off is intended to reveal the ugliness beneath the slick marketing sheen of either a COTS package or a SaaS offering.

In a world of walled gardens and content silos, the Dropbox solution proved a simple yet mighty cloud based app, which launched four years ago, and grew to 45 million users, giving many their first introduction to cloud storage. But like most simple ideas, the utility grows when combined with the processing power of the net. Enter Dropbox Automator.  

Dropbox Automator offers the new ability to set bulk actions to documents placed in a folder, and became an instant hit with 10,000 users registered in less than 72 hours. But the cobbled-together code that emerged from the creative juices of a 2-day work session, and subsequent wager among friends, needed refinement, and that was announced this week by Wappwolf.com.

Since I began covering e-Discovery in 2008, a lot has happened. Companies have been hard-pressed to come up with a cost-effective, yet manageable way to collect, gain access to and review relevant information created within its four walls and in the cloud. Companies experimented with outside counsel and in-house e-Discovery platforms. Vendors promised exciting new technologies from enterprise search to workflow management to predictive coding, aimed at decreasing cost, effort and risk, while increasing reliability, accuracy and defensibility. And yet, we still don’t always know what’s working well within the enterprise. Thanks to a new report by FTI, we have an inside look at how companies are using e-Discovery, their best practices and their expectations for the future.

In early January, we predicted that Colligo would be one of the vendor’s third-party SharePoint products to watch this year. In December, it introduced Colligo Briefcase Enterprise for iPad. Today, in keeping with our earlier predictions, it has released Colligo Briefcase Pro.

This week Microsoft and Google started popping at each other again over Office, Laserfiche gets data mining in v8.3, SeeUnity offers iPad access to SharePoint documents and Open Text eDOCS, while Idera offers document encryption to SharePoint users.

This week in GRC was always going to be about LegalTech and everything that came out of it. Well, it's finishing up today, and it didn’t disappoint. There were releases from Autonomy, Recommind, Digital Reef and a whole lot more.

eXo has released the latest version of its open source portal, eXo 3.5. The release has lots of new features, but the big news may be the portal’s journey to the cloud.
