Altien Brings ECM Ease to Legal World

It might be safe to say most companies are only as good as the strength of their record-keeping. This cannot be more true than it is in the corporate legal industry, where the difference between government compliance and non-compliance is dependent on proper and efficient data organization and delivery.
UK-based Altien has just released Altien for Corporate Legal, an Enterprise CMS offering for legal departments that deals with the document management and workflow needs of in-house staff.
The solution runs on IBM FileNet Enterprise Content Management, the resulting platform from last year’s <a href=”FileNet acquisition by IBM. This isn’t the first time Altien’s worked with IBM FileNet to bring ease to enterprise document management, which bodes well for this collaboration.

Though organizations in general seek to standardize ECM platforms in the face of increasingly global workflow, corporate legal departments present unique document management challenges.
Corporate legal departments must ensure their businesses meet compliance requirements while improving contract management efficiency, handling frequent mergers, acquisitions and restructuring; managing litigations and discovery requests; and optimizing information obtained from outside counsel. These issues drive the need for an efficient and precise information and business process management solution.
“Standalone legal document management systems create a barrier to information sharing and the co-ordination of legal and compliance-related business processes across the enterprise,” says CEO Jason Hirst of Altien. “Altien for Corporate Legal offers a new, attractive alternative to standalone systems because it can run on the same ECM infrastructure as the rest of the organization.” He adds that because Altien shares an ECM platform with the enterprise, organizations can better consolidate their back-end systems and reduce data center costs.
In addition to that immediate benefit, Altien boasts the following merits:
- Integration with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes and Novell GroupWise
- WorkShare integration
- Cross-repository search and retrieval
- Advanced Web client interface
- Support for both IBM FileNet P8 and IBM DB2 Content Manager
- Integration with Microsoft Word and Corel WordPerfect
- Workflow integration
- Data integration
The 2006 Association of Corporate Counsel/Serengeti Survey noted “keeping track of company activities that might have legal implications” was the top concern of 86 percent of in-house counsel respondents. That’s no small priority. Cheers to Altien for easing the burden with an IBM FileNet-friendly offering. Learn more about Altien for Corporate Legal at the Altien website.
