Documentum Demonstrates Mainframe-Scale Performance With Billion-Object Repository Benchmark
Documentum, the leading provider of enterprise content management (ECM), today announced that thecompany has successfully demonstrated the mainframe-level performance and scalability of the Documentum 5 ECM platform, with a billion-object repositorybenchmark. The benchmark simulated loading more than one billion objects, consisting of e-mail and image archives, and was conducted on low-cost hardware, with a single repository serviced by multiple dual-processor Intel systems.
The real-world, large scale imaging application, based on Documentum's Webtop user interface, delivered excellent response time to more than 1,000 concurrent users. The throughput on the billion object repository was virtually unchanged. In conjunction with this benchmark, Documentum has developed a repeatable benchmark methodology service that organizations can use to validate real-world scalability and performance of an open content management system, running a prototype of their own applications.
This unparalleled benchmark represents a major milestone in enterprise content management scalability and illustrates how organizations can retire expensive, proprietary systems for less expensive, more flexible enterprise content management systems utilizing open systems hardware and software infrastructure. Documentum 5 provides mainframe-scale performance and availability, while dramatically lowering total cost of ownership.
Using the Documentum methodology, based on deployment models, best practices and pre-built scenarios, customers can design, stage and deploy a full-scale, high-volume production environment. They can plan and optimize specific applications, such as email archiving, high-volume scanning and imaging, loan origination or claims processing, and determine the appropriate hardware and software configurations to maximize technology investments. In this way, Documentum's repeatable methodology can aid customers in the transition from traditional mainframes to a more cost-effective open systems infrastructure.
Documentum ECM Platform: Mainframe Power at Open System Prices
Due to increased regulatory requirements and price reductions in disk storage, companies are storing greater volumes of content and retaining it for longer periods of time, quickly accumulating billions of objects. The Documentum ECM platform, widely recognized as the industry's leading solution for creating, managing, delivering and archiving unstructured content, enables organizations to automatically route content to the most cost-effective storage solution throughout its lifecycle, ensuring data protection and business continuity, at the lowest possible cost. With an object-relational architecture that combines the strengths of a relational database and a file system, the Documentum platform can manage virtually an unlimited number of objects in its repository. It provides a universal content repository capable of storing and managing all types of objects, such as documents, email, scanned images, web pages, XML, rich media, enterprise records, engineering drawings, reports or x-rays.
“Documentum offers a no-compromise solution, enabling companies to build their infrastructure according to business requirements, not technology constraints,” said Howard Shao, executive vice president and chief technology officer of the Documentum software division of EMC. “We continue to see companies migrate from expensive, proprietary mainframes and believe the Documentum ECM platform is a cost-effective alternative. This billion object benchmark demonstrates the tremendous scalability — but certainly not the limit — of the Documentum ECM platform.”
Longstanding Documentum customer, Corporate Express, one of the world's largest business-to-business suppliers of essential office and computer products and services, deployed the Documentum ECM platform to store, access and manage nearly 15 million internal forms and financial documents, and enable thousands of employees and customers to access this content via the web. “With the large number of customer invoices stored in our Documentum repository, we've taken advantage of the scalability of the Documentum platform,” said Wayne Aiello, vice president of eBusiness Services for Corporate Express. “We know we can count on Documentum to address our growing needs for many years to come.”
