EMC Releases Free Documentum Developer Edition Enterprise CMS
EMC (news, site) is committed to offering tools for the everyday knowledge worker who needs enterprise content management services, but doesn't want to use complex tools.

My Documentum

EMC My Documentum is a family of products designed to support the knowledge worker in their daily activities. My Documentum is a set of tools that enable knowledge workers to use enterprise content management capabilities from familiar tools like email, SharePoint and more.

My Documentum for Outlook

My Documentum for Outlook is a radically improved version, says EMC's Lance Shaw, Group Product Marketing Manager, Knowledge Worker Applications. This new version has deeper integration with the native Outlook interface, including menus, toolbars, folders and search.

Working with just about any version of Microsoft Outlook -- 2003, 2007, XP), users can access documents directly in Outlook that reside in Documentum repositories. From within Outlook, users can directly place documents into secure Documentum repositories, email thread and all for context.

The ability to use Outlook rules for managing documents is also another nice feature, as is offline capabilities with automatic synchronization of changes when online.

We asked Shaw if there was support for Lotus Notes in the My Documentum family. He told us there hasn't been a really big demand for this capability in the past, but it is being discussed for the latest version of Lotus Notes.

My Documentum for Desktop

Another new version is My Documentum for Desktop. The latest version provides access to Documentum repositories via file shares and/or mapped drives.

Using Windows Explorer or Apple MacIntosh Finder, this is the simplest access possible for working with Documentum repositories.

Because it works for file shares and mapped drives, this functionality is also available through Office Applications such as Word and Excel.

My Documentum for SharePoint

We've talked about My Documentum for SharePoint previously. This deeply enhanced version was announced at the SharePoint conference 2009 along with a couple of other Documentum / SharePoint integrations.

My Documentum for SharePoint includes a Documentum Library Web Part and a Documentum repository search web part.

My Documentum Offline

A much demanded feature, My Documentum Offline provides the ability to take documents offline to work on them. Sitting in the Windows System Tray, the Offline Client provides point and click capabilities to store local copies of documents on the desktop for offline management.

Both automated and on demand synchronization are available, and users can configure the synchronization as required. In addition, conflicts are managed by the Offline client when synchronization occurs.

Shaw says that all security and access rules still apply and IRM (Information Rights Management) can be applied to documents or folders within Documentum to ensure offline access is limited.

Supporting the Knowledge Worker

"One of the reasons why many enterprise content management initiatives fail is that ECM functionality is not well integrated into the business applications that knowledge workers use every day, " said Melissa Webster, Program Vice President, Content and Media Digital Technologies, IDC.

EMC is obviously going out its way to support the business systems used by knowledge workers like Outlook, Office and SharePoint. And with no training required for new toolsets, many knowledge workers will be happy.

With the exception of My Documentum for Desktop, all tools are available today. The Desktop tool is expected to be available later this month.
