Liferay Portal 5.2 Adds CMS, Web 2.0 Integration

Liferay, Inc., announced the version 5.2 release of Liferay Portal Standard Edition -- an open source portal platform that integrates content management, collaboration and social networking. The latest release promises enhanced performance, scalability and simplified administration. Liferay now offers a value-added commercial Enterprise Edition (EE) in addition to the open source Standard Edition (SE).

The Liferay Portal 5.2 release encompasses several new features, existing feature enhancements and the latest security modifications. Among them are:

  • Control Panel: The new control panel unifies portal administration from within a single interface. This new version aims at simplifying deployment and management of multiple websites, team sites, intranets, and customer portals from a shared Liferay Portal infrastructure (multi-tenant portal).
  • Microsoft Integration: Users can continue to work from preferred software suites like MS Office. Liferay 5.2 implements the MS-DWSS SharePoint protocol to allow users to save and retrieve documents to and from Liferay Portal as if it were a SharePoint server.

  • Built-in web content management and a content integration framework allow users to aggregate and publish existing and new content for the creation of websites and collaborative workspaces.
  • Improved Collaboration and Social Networking: Liferay’s built-in suite of social computing tools now allows for multiple forums, wikis, blogs and document libraries to be created and matched to specific user groups or knowledge areas within the same site.

Back End Performance and Responsiveness Improvements

Liferay 5.2 release adds front and back end performance improvements to deliver additional speed and responsiveness by reduction of processor, network, and memory requirements. Among these improvements are:

  • Back-end performance: Distribute read / write operations between two separate databases. Data-bound applications benefit from increased database throughput, which maximizes the amount of data that the portal can serve.

  • Front-end performance: JavaScript and CSS caching and new use of CSS Sprites yield quantifiable increases in speed, allowing image-heavy pages to load faster.

Scalability and Reliability

  • Terracotta integration: Integration with open source clustering software for Java applications.

  • New WSRP Implementation: Full WSRP1.0/2.0 specification support allows for portal publishing from remote servers.

Liferay Portal 5.2 Standard Edition is available for download. The Enterprise Edition of Liferay Portal 5.2 will be available later this year, providing multi-year subscriptions for maintenance, support and optional indemnification. Enterprises can begin evaluation using the Standard Edition and move to Enterprise Edition for production systems.
