AvePoint (news, site) announced its DocAve Storage Optimization Suite late last year to help manage unruly SharePoint 2007 and SharePoint 2010 environments. Now it says it will offer a tool from that suite -- the DocAve Extender -- for free.
Managing SharePoint Blog Content
As part of SharePoint Service Pack 2, Microsoft released a new External Binary Storage Provider API (EBS Provider) that would allow you to store all of SharePoint's BLOB (Binary Large Objects) content -- such as documents -- in a repository other than SQL Server, SharePoint's native repository.
Since then, we have seen a few vendors leverage the EBS Provider to store the content in their repositories (EMC and Open Text are two). And we have seen vendors like AvePoint offer tools to help manage this BLOB content as well.
SharePoint EBS Provider
AvePoint introduced its DocAve Storage Optimization Suite in beta late last year, a suite which included the DocAve Extender, tool for managing BLOB content.
Here's what we told you about the DocAve Extender back in November (read the full article to learn about the other tools in this optimization suite):
The Extender utilizes the Microsoft BLOB Storage APIs to instantly push content to non-SharePoint storage as soon as it's added to SharePoint. The end-user never knows the content isn't being stored in SharePoint.
Rules can be set to identify exactly what BLOB content should be stored within SharePoint's SQL Server repository and what should be moved off SharePoint.
The Extender is Free in North America
AvePoint has announced that it will offer the DocAve Extender free to North American organizations when version 5.4 of its DocAve Software Platform is released on March 11 of this year.
The DocAve Extender is one of three tools within the Optimization suite that can be deployed independently (the Connector and Archiver are the other two).
On March 11, you can download the full DocAve Software Platform, which the Extender is a part of. This is a 30 day trial download. So at the end of the 30 days, if you want to continue using the Extender, but not the entire platform, you will need to call or email AvePoint to get a perpetual license for Extender.
