David Barrett is the guy who created "expense reports that don't suck!"
Specifically, he's the CEO of Expensify, a company that claims to help 2 million users and more than 300,000 companies in 169 countries create-pain-free expense reports.
And he is also a pretty clever marketer, judging by his attempt today to lure customers away from a competitor.
We're Here for You
A few weeks ago, SAP announced it acquired Bellevue, Wash.,-based Concur Technologies, a business travel management software provider. The $8.3 billion deal is designed to beef up the global enterprise powerhouse's HANA platform.
Barrett couldn't be more excited. "This is great for nearly everybody: SAP, Concur shareholders, and especially for us," he explained in an email today to clients, potential clients and other interested parties, including CMSWire.
Everyone, he concludes, except Concur customers. For them, he continued, "The future just got a bit cloudier (and not in a good way). They probably feel locked into a long-term contract with a company whose focus has suddenly shifted away from their needs, and I'm sure that doesn't feel great."
Make the Switch - Free
Barrett is offering Concur customers the option to switch to Expensify and pay nothing for the duration of their contracts.
"If that's one year, 10 years or a 1,000 years -- no problem. There's no need to stick it out to the end: you can switch today without stressing over the sunk cost," he said.
To take advantage of the offer, all Concur customers have to do is send an email to email@example.com. But Barrett isn't stopping with polite suggestions. He's taking it waaay beyond:
If you're convinced the company will never switch, we've whipped up something this weekend for you too: we call it 'Submit to Concur.' To enable, just sign in to https://expensify.com, click Settings > Connections > Concur, and enter your Concur username/password. Create your next report using Expensify as normal -- including our cutting-edge mobile app and revolutionary SmartScan technology -- and when you submit we'll connect via the Concur API, upload the receipts, and create the report for you. So whether you're in charge or not, there's no reason to suffer through to the bitter end: you can make the switch to Expensify by yourself, today, without waiting for the rest of your company."
No Hard Feelings?
Barrett's company is based in San Francisco. But he ends the email like, well, a Southern gentleman … bless his heart. He extends a warm congratulations to Concur co-founder and CEO Steve Singh, noting "it's a great new day for the industry."
But the last line of the email tells it all. "Congratulations to Steve … it was a fantastic run. We'll take it from here!"
