There are two interesting points to note around HP Autonomy’s (HPA) Healthcare Analytics release. The first is that HPA has developed its IDOL technology to target a specific vertical. The second is that it's a self-service platform designed with users in mind rather than IT.
Healthcare Analytics will not be released until next month, but HPA is already talking it up at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference this week in Orlando, Fla.
Creating Better Healthcare?
According to HPA, the new analytics platform will take all the unstructured data in patient records, health trials and other medical research to develop better healthcare and reduce waste in healthcare budgets.
In the US alone, the potential for saving money across services that are already financial stretched, is enormous. In fact, according to the Center for Public Integrity, in a single year Medicare wasted $47.9 billion from miscoded conditions, missed diagnoses and ineffective population health-management programs.
HPA worked with Stanford Children’s Health in California over the past year to develop the application with the goal of making medical information more accessible to practitioners.
If IT and the development of new technologies have always been part of advancing medical knowledge, the information management end of the equation analytics has largely been about analyzing structured information.
The remaining 90 percent of all information is unstructured and in the form of patient records, doctors’ clinical notes, emails between doctors and patients and laboratory results. This information has until now, been largely ignored because of the sheer volume and the inability to digest and analyze that data.
If it is managed at all, it is simply digitized, and archived, and largely forgotten about, depriving users of the opportunity to mine that data and identify patterns.
HPA and IDOL 10.5
HP IDOL was developed to deal with exactly this kind of problem. By applying IDOL to solving health problems, HP says, healthcare workers can benefit from insights that reduce errors and unnecessary treatments, impact how delivery and treatment affects outcomes, and enable preventive measures that decrease the rate of avoidable diseases.
The new platform is a combination of established IDOL functionality that has been developed specifically for the healthcare industry.
It is also worth pointing out that this follows the recent IDOL upgrade to v 10.5,in which HPA added connectors to elements of HP’s HAVEn big data platform including ArcSight, HP Vertica and Hadoop, and simplified its administration.
At the time, HP said that this was to make it accessible to business users and enable users analyze unstructured data using IDOL and structured data by connecting to Vertica. The simplified administration also enabled HPA to develop Healthcare analytics as a self-service platform.
The result is that Healthcare Analytics is an HIPAA compliant platform that offers insights through visually driven analytical reporting via an industry-specialized interactive user interface.
It also comes with a healthcare-specific taxonomy system containing more than 350,000 healthcare concepts and more than 2 million clinical concepts. It can also be complemented with strategic service offerings including assessment, consulting, deployment and support services to address specific customer needs
Healthcare Analytics will be officially unveiled tomorrow at the HIMSS conference and will be generally available in March.
