HP Information Optimizer, Autonomy IDOL Integrate For e-Discovery

HP Autonomy has announced several significant enhancements to its market-leading e-Discovery offering, helping organizations automate and simplify processing of large, diverse data sets.

Largely as a result of the ongoing dispute over the former management team of Autonomy and the current management team of HP, the products get overlooked. This week HP and Autonomy have announced a number of upgrades to Autonomy’s e-Discovery software that demonstrates further evidence of Autonomy integration into the HP portfolio.

And it is this that has been on the mind of most commentators watching HP and how it manages the Autonomy acquisition, especially when, like recently, rumors start circulating that HP may have found a buyer for Autonomy.

While you should never say never in the IT business, especially when you are talking about mergers and acquisitions, the fact that since HP bought out Autonomy — and lets not discuss the price here — it has been integrating its technology into the HP products and the deeper the integration, the less likely it is that it will divest it.

Apart from the fact that HP’s CEO Meg Whitman has insisted HP is holding onto to it, the kind of integrations that are happening would make it difficult to dump Autonomy anyway, even if she was in a selling frame of mind.

HP, Autonomy, e-Discovery

The main product — or technology — that made Autonomy worth at least some of the US$ 10.4 billion HP paid for it is its Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL).

With it, users find contextual meaning around data, which means that it can understand what the data is about, what it relates to and, more importantly, how it can be used.

This week’s announcement is a good example of all of the above. By combing the HP Application Information Optimizer with Autonomy’s e-Discovery software, it will not only be able to ingest data into the e-Discovery software, but also review structured data too.

This basically means that structured data stored in complex, relational database-based applications will be findable and relate-able to the discovery process. On top of this, it will be able to synthesize structured data with related unstructured data.

But that’s not the limit of this week’s announcement. HP has also announced that it has extended Autonomy’s Meaning Based Coding (MBC) capabilities to its Early Case Assessment module, using the contextual abilities again to identify early, key issues in the process.

Unlike other predictive coding technologies, MBC classifications are carried through the process to the review and production phase without having to process or index the content again during the later phases.

It has also announced the release of a new, fully integrated native discovery module that runs in conjunction with the on-premises versions of Autonomy Consolidated Archive (ACA), governance and archiving solution that is also powered n by IDOL.
