After announcing the creation of its Business Process Solutions group last week, OpenText is back this week with the release of Tempo that promises to make document sharing quicker and mobile, while synchronizing data across computers and devices.

With easy and effective enterprise collaboration functionality just about de rigeur in releases for the enterprise space, OpenText’s Tempo simplifies the sharing of information stored in repositories either on-premise, or as a mobile option.

Content Sharing

Tempo bypasses the usually awkward issues around emailing content between colleagues, as it does the share-drives that create as many problems as they do solutions to sharing content.

Tempo is a scalable app-centered hybrid platform for both on-premise and mobile devices, which OpenText says it is in the process of patenting before its January release.

The result is something that sits as easily in the cloud as it does in the enterprise. Embracing this new capability -- OpenText modestly claims -- unlocks digital assets in the enterprise using the native abilities of smartphones and tablets with Tempo built from the ground-up to make best use of the new capabilities of mobile devices. Functionality includes:

  • Access to content from any device, mobile or otherwise
  • Sharing of information and collaboration with colleagues in a secure way
  • Simplicity results in less training requirements

Replacing Internal Email?

The focus of this release, if you haven’t gathered from the name, is speed. OpenText CTO Eugene Roman says that the company is hoping it will run in tandem with email as one the principal forms of communication between work colleagues.

He says Tempo takes advantage of existing IT infrastructures to create a situation where business-critical information can be sent across the enterprise, securely and quickly.

As an application aimed at sharing information across the enterprise, it is unlikely to impact on email's function in internal communication.

Instead of competing with it, in fact, if it manages to speed-up the process of sharing information, and at the same time get relevant information -- rather than the usual enterprise spam -- to the prople who need it, then it will be a major addition enterprise collaboration.

Roman adds that beta testing has already shown time savings for users. It also added to the value of their smartphones.

This is particularly true as it lets users retrieve and share content using various devices at the same time, while synchronizing it across devices and between trusted users. In addition to this, it is also securely stored, easily retrieved and sharable from a smart screen or keyboard.

Enterprises can choose to deploy OpenText Tempo on-premise or adopt the hybrid model. The hybrid approach allows the enterprise to retain control over information assets, while offloading the effort of maintaining the service to OpenText. Tempo will be generally available in January.
