Originate has acquired the professional services company Applied Intelligence Group, which makes digital platform solutions.
The deal gives Originate, a San Francisco-based venture and enterprise development firm, a foothold in the Boston area where Applied Intelligence is based. The two firms have worked together since 2012. Originate already has seven other branches.
"Opening an Originate office in Boston also brings us closer to some of the country’s premier enterprises and institutions,” Rob Meadows, CEO of Originate, said in a statement. He said Applied Intelligence adds " unparalleled talent" to solve client problems.
Originate, which was founded in 2007, said the acquisition follows other recent investments, including its development of a new “Scala Transformation” platform. Its clients include Angie's List, Echo360, Asurion and Zoodles.
The companies aren't disclosing the value of the acquisition, said Originate spokeswoman Tricia Primrose. She said Originate often invests in companies with which it has a working relationship. "They wear two hats with a venture side plus they work with companies," she explained.
With a presence in Boston, the company said it hopes to apply its knowledge of educational institutions to work with large universities in the Boston area. Primrose said the company has recruited employees from MIT, but doesn't yet have established relationships with specific universities.
Since its founding more than two decades ago, Applied Intelligence has focused on desktop, web and mobile products. Its services include design, development and product management for digital solutions.
“From the first time we met Rob and worked with Originate, it was clear that we shared the same values and outlook,” said Alex Horovitz, a co-founder and managing partner of Applied Intelligence. “Developing elegant software solutions for enterprises through a partnership model, where our partner’s success is our success, means everyone is aligned and firing all cylinders toward the same goal.”
Horovitz will lead the Boston office along with Jeff Bartolini, currently VP for product development at Applied Intelligence.
In addition to Boston, Originate has offices in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Orange County, Stockholm, Hangzhou, New York and Los Angeles.
