Enterprise computing needs some new mojo — and if Pivotal CEO Paul Maritz and his crew have their way, it will first be built — and then found — atop their brand of Cloud Foundry.
Bear with us as we explain this because Cloud Foundry is an Apache Open Source project that will soon be governed by a foundation and leveraged by as many as 34 vendors (thus far). Pivotal CF is an enterprise-grade Platform as a Service (PaaS) that EMC and VMware spinoff Pivotal provides. It is powered by Cloud Foundry.
Sound complicated? Just think of Cloud Foundry as the Cloud’s Linux.
A New Generation
Why do I need to know this, you might be asking? The answer is pretty simple.
The next generation of business applications won’t be anything like the ones you’re building or using today. Instead of automating business processes that could be done on paper, they’ll be more like Google and Facebook, for which there is no paper equivalent. This is how Maritz explained it to a packed house at EMC World last month.
These applications will be born of an era in which big data, mobile, social, Cloud, and the Internet of Things are the drivers. New platforms, new databases and new tools will be required to leverage them.
Not only that, but unlike their predecessors, 3rd platform developers won’t need to concern themselves with storage or how many machines they can access at a given time; they’ll also have a gamut of languages and tools at their disposal, and abundant data to work with and from which to extract reason.
It’s time to lean-in to all of this richness, say 3rd platform evangelists, and to build new experiences and new business models.
Brand Spankin' New
Earlier today, at the Cloud Foundry Summit in San Francisco, Pivotal introduced its latest release, Pivotal CF 1.3, complete with new capabilities that promise to make it easier for Enterprises to leverage the Cloud and to drive fast, agile, software-driven businesses. The idea around Pivotal CF, specifically, is to eliminate everything that stands between developer and IT operations teams and their ability to build and deliver Next-Gen apps closer to the speed of business.
For the geeks among us, specific developer features include:
Pivotal HD — Pivotal’s Hadoop distro, which is built into Pivotal CF for both developer speed and operations accountability. In addition to providing developers with dedicated Hadoop clusters in seconds, operations can now define service plans that enable them to bind their Pivotal CF applications to the enterprise's data lake.
Runtimes — New build packs for Go, Python and PHP, in addition to Java, Ruby and Node.js applications. With these build packs, developers have a “push and it just works” experience.
Specific Ops Capabilities Include:
Multiple Availability Zones for HA requirements – Applications can be automatically deployed into dual availability zones in an enterprise private cloud. As a result, enterprises are able to build redundancy into every application — tolerating up to a 50% loss of hardware capacity without downtime — and spanning multiple local data centers with ease.
Audit and Usage Dashboard for Platform Administrators – Enhanced auditing capabilities include a dynamically updated application dashboard that provides developers and operators' usage reports, real time application status, events and logs.
Monitoring via JMX – Pivotal CF components can now be monitored with JMX, which collects and exposes VM and system data to assist in troubleshooting.
Time to Dive In
What Pivotal has done with the latest release of Pivotal CF is pave the way for the next generation of developers to build solutions that rapidly extract information, analyze it, and feed it back into the system.
The enterprises that do this best will be well-positioned to win the future.
