Microsoft and EMC Get Cozy Over DM

Microsoft and Enterprise CMS gorilla, EMC, announce fawning alliance for document management, SharePoint (MOSS 2007), and Office application integration.

The collaboration will link Microsoft’s SharePoint Server (MOSS 2007) with EMC’s “Documentum” family of content management software — a major goal being management of unstructured data to comply with government regulations.

Workers will be able to use the Microsoft Office Suite (2007 version) to perform content management operations with their company’s critical business data via the Documentum architecture. To achieve this, EMC plans to introduce a set of new content and archiving products which will integrate their enterprise content management (ECM) platform with Microsoft technologies including Microsoft Office SharePoint, Server 2007, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, SQL Server 2005 and enterprise search solutions.

Kurt DelBene, vice president of the Office Business Platform Group at Microsoft, explains that through this alliance, “we are offering customers more choice and control over the management of their business information.”

Enabling users to perform content management functions using familiar software programs will provide transparent access to corporate data, and is already being hailed by users as a big step in the right direction.

Microsoft and EMC will be demonstrating integration of the EMC platform and Microsoft SharePoint (MOSS 2007) at the upcoming Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2006.

In related maneuvers, Microsoft formed an alliance with SAP this past May, providing Office users the ability to access information and workflows in SAP systems.

Microsoft, EMC, and other Enterprise CMS vendors are up against IBM’s aggressive acquisition of FileNet earlier this year.
