Enterprises have increasingly embraced open source as a part of their technology portfolio. Despite the growth, some leaders are still hesitant about “officially” endorsing open source options. There are fewer support options, more unknowns and an almost complete absence of magic quadrant style analysts’ reports to guide decision-making. Open source solutions provider OpenLogic may be changing that. The firm has released a new, detailed finding about enterprise open source trends in 2011.

Microsoft is continuing to earn its open source stripes. The company’s latest Windows Azure updates added support for several open source tools. The open source love isn’t stopping with Azure though: Microsoft is also allowing open source applications in the Windows Store, which is being launched for Windows 8.

Nuxeo has announced a new release of its open source enterprise CMS platform. The most recent version, 5.5, is a significant enhancement to the platform. Nuxeo continues to show its commitment to abandoning the traditional application-oriented approach to enterprise CMS in favor of providing a feature-rich platform for building content-centric applications. Version 5.5 adds social features, mobile enhancements and a number of technical enhancements that improve developer productivity.

Microsoft is taking big strides to make its Azure cloud service more attractive. The company has announced several updates to the platform aimed at improving its usability. The company, which has long been criticized for a less-than-friendly stance on open source, is continuing to show that giants can change. Several of the recently announced updates improve support for open source development on Azure.
