ODF AllianceAlfresco, a leading vendor of open source enterprise content management (ECM) solutions has joined the ODF Alliance.

Covered previously, Alfresco’s document management component includes an OpenDocument Format (ODF) Virtual File System. This offers a simple shared drive interface to any office application.

Using Alfresco’s Virtual File System both Microsoft Office and Open Office users can save or drag-n-drop documents into intelligent DM drop-zones, where rules and actions automatically convert incoming content into the ODF format. This is particularly useful for long-term archival and records management.

ODF is an open XML file format that was approved by the International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC 26300) as a standard in May 2006. Additional information is available via the OASIS OpenDocument Technical Committee and the OASIS ODF Adoption Technical Committee.
