Fixing Appalling Intranet Search

By Gerry McGovern  ::  Filed Under » Web Content

Intranet search is appalling because people don’t want their content to get found, and the organization does not value the importance of finding.

Intranets Are Not Information Dumps

By Gerry McGovern  ::  Filed Under » Web Content

mainsoft sharepoint moss websphere integration

We all know that SharePoint (MOSS) is being heavily used for basic document management and collaboration services. We also know that the software is often deployed in an environment where it must be integrated with other technologies like content management systems and portals — why else would so many Enterprise CMS vendors cooking-up nifty connectors and building repository bridges?

The message is clear: Knowledge workers the world over are putting a lot of digital stuff into MOSS and if your tech can’t talk MOSS, you’re liable to be left out in the cold.

Yahoo's New Site for Women is Shiny But Not Bright

By Marisa Peacock  ::  Filed Under » Web Content

Yahoo Shine, Yahoo,women's site

The other day, colleagues and I made a list of of things that sound bad but aren’t — such as Jawbreakers and Chunky Monkey. But now I’ve started making a list of things that sound good but aren’t. Topping the list are sites catered toward women.

Don’t get me wrong, women rock. And what makes us so visibly cool is that we have diverse interests, moods and yes, emotions. But that doesn’t mean we can’t handle weeding through the Internet to find what we seek, whether it be the weather, a great pair of shoes or gasp! —news.

However, Yahoo! begs to differ. They think that the gentler sex are easily distracted by all the choices available to us on the magical Web that we need a one-stop shop offering content from women’s magazines and blogs with a “distinctive voice” .

Why else would they launch Shine?

SharePoint Web Content Management Licensing was Botched

By Barb Mosher and Brice Dunwoodie  ::  Filed Under » Web CMS
SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) is described by Microsoft as an enterprise content management system. However, under the covers it sports web content management, document management, search, collaboration and business intelligence, among other talents.

If you ask the experts, the primary target market for SharePoint is small and medium businesses (SMBs). If you ask SMBs you might get a different answer though — as the licensing model alone is enough to send most of them running, with tails tucked tightly between their legs.

What if you are a SMB who just wants a solid Web CMS for your external website? Has SharePoint been priced out of your space? What about the companies who bought into Microsoft CMS (MCMS) and were expecting to continue playing with Wild Billy and Redmond Content Wranglers?

The SMB Web CMS market, we assert, has been left high and dry by Microsoft.

SharePoint part of Microsoft's Citizen Services Platform

Microsoft is always looking out for someone aren’t they? This time it’s small, local governments who are responsible for 80% of the transactions between government and its citizens (individuals and businesses). They now offer the Citizen Services Platform, a combination of technologies, which includes SharePoint, and solution offerings designed to put the “e” in local e-government.

Red Hat + Alfresco == SharePoint Killer?

By John Conroy  ::  Filed Under » Enterprise 2.0

Alfresco Enterprise CMS

Every week, it seems, there’s a big announcement from Alfresco. Last week 2.9 came out, offering integration with iGoogle and Adobe Flex.

A little bit before that, the company released a cheeky Facebook hookup that turned heads. And in between announcements, Alfresco has been boasting to anyone who’ll listen about how great the product is, ragging mercilessly on Sharepoint, and generally acting like drunken cowboys in a frontier saloon.

Drupal open source web content management system

“When I examine the landscape of open source projects that have had a big impact on the technology industry, I’ve concluded that projects which have had the biggest impact (usually) have a well-capitalized company behind them.”
