Back in December when rumors first swirled around the Facebook/Gowalla deal, neither company offered details for a few days. Finally, Josh Williams, Gowalla founder, confirmed that his company had been purchased by Facebook. In a blog post, Williams explained:

About two months ago, my co-founder Scott and I attended F8. We were blown away by Facebook’s new developments. A few weeks later Facebook called, and it became clear that the way for our team to have the biggest impact was to work together. So we’re excited to announce that we’ll be making the journey to California to join Facebook!"

Williams also said that the Gowalla service would wind down by January 2012 and that he and most of the Gowalla employees would move to the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto to work on the Facebook Timeline feature.

API Activity

According to a story on Mashable, Williams and his team are now working on developing an API that lets app developers integrate Facebook features, such as status updates and checkins. Last week, Facebook developer Alex Wyler wrote about the new features:

Starting today, location and friends can be added as properties to any photo, link, or status written from an app. This is similar to the functionality a user has when they add a photo or updates their status."

Wyler also explained the APIs and documentation that is now available to help developers enable the new features. The Open Graph API rolled out in 2010, and in January of this year, Facebook announced more than 60 new apps built with the Open Graph platform.

With the new apps, such as RunKeeper and Pinterest, Facebook continues to bring more of each user's life to the social media site.
