In August, we illustrated the current state of SharePoint. As it is now December and time for retrospectives, we decided that we'd take a look back at what kept us most engaged about SharePoint this year — SharePoint 2013.
Currently in beta and scheduled to be released for the public in the first quarter of 2013, we spent a great deal of time dissecting it, testing it, previewing it, and deciding whether it was worth upgrading to or not.
SharePoint 2013 is the Talk of the Town
For SharePoint enthusiasts, there was a lot to talk about. SharePoint 2013 has a new interface, new social capabilities and it simplifies many of the issues that we complained about in earlier releases. However, as this is SharePoint 2013, and many companies are still debating to upgrade from 2007 to 2010, it's safe to assume that it may take awhile for most companies to complete the upgrade to this new version.
That said, SharePoint 2013 has made some dramatic changes that can make it a more significant player in enterprise social network marketplace. There's an app store, users can micro blog, tag users in posts and add tasks to timelines with better customization and in less time.
Since it was released in beta, many of our SharePoint experts have found things that they love, things that surprised them and things that indicate that you shouldn't waste your time.
SharePoint will be SharePoint. It will never make all of us happy all of the time, but SharePoint 2013 is a big step forward for creating, sharing, controlling and protecting our documents and projects in a business world that is slowly adapting social business strategies.
