Sitecore recently announced the coming version of their flagship web content management system and today the product is officially out the door.

Our technical and editorial teams had an opportunity to test drive the new Sitecore 6 product last week. And with this latest version out of the gates today, we thought it apropos that we share a bit of what we saw.

In a very few words, version 6.0 is a nice corner-rounding release that demonstrates both that the company cares about its customers and that it has a successful process of building client feedback into the product development cycle.

Fortunately, companies like FatWire Software are making it easier to manage and access content across the messy, complex environments we often have to deal with. They have recently announced the availability of their FatWire Content Integration Platform as well as the beta release of the EMC Documentum connector to enable customers to more effectively manage content across complex environments.

Microsoft isn’t the only game in town if you want to build your website in a hosted SharePoint environment. SharePoint360, a SharePoint hosting and consulting firm located in San Diego, has launched a new SaaS offering — SharePoint360 Web.

The very last panel I attended at the Gilbane Conference in San Francisco was also one that I had the privilege of moderating. Our topic was the big hot topic of the conference: how to integrate social networking features into the enterprise and whether or not they can co-exist happily with a content management system. Specifically in our panel’s case, we talked about Facebook’s utility. The net takeaway from our panel was — it’s all about the platform; Facebook matters because of its ability to integrate outside applications.

After navigating the murky lands of translation and globalizing content, I attended a panel at Gilbane that was a detailed look at XML and its importance in content management. The overall message I left with at the end was that XML was “tremendous technology” and as one panelist put it, “the most important integration tool in software today”.

Mention web content management and open source in a single question today and you commonly get two words back: Drupal and Alfresco. These are the two most well-known open source content management solutions in the market today. It seems that Forrester has not been too busy dishing up Enterprise 2.0 predictions to recognize this.

Drupal was only one of a few open source solution providers who had a booth at the recent Enterprise 2.0 conference. Although open source didn’t appear to be adequately represented at the conference, there has been a great deal of blogging on open source social computing solutions for the enterprise and specifically on Drupal’s ability to play a leading role.

At the eZ Conference developer day this week, eZ Systems announced plans for the newest upcoming version of their web content management system eZ Publish 4.1. This latest version will have some new back-end support and enhanced user experience features.

In addition, a new version of eZ Components was announced this morning which includes three new components.
