CrownPeak CMS Launches Social Media-Friendly URL Shortener

CrownPeak (news, site) recognizes the importance of URL shortening for social media and social networking, while retaining the ability to measure that content through web analytics tools.

The news release of the CrownPeak URL Shortener allows CrownPeak CMS users to take advantage of the automatically generated short URLs, or modify them manually to create a customized URL. Voila, and we are social media-ready.

A job that can be done by services like bit.ly and 3.ly, is now handled within the CMS itself to generate CPeak.us and alike URLs.

Some of the uses of CrownPeak’s new URL Shortener include:

  • Web and social media content publishing with CrownPeak CMS ability to automatically publishe content directly into some popular social networks.
  • Web analytics integration (with CrownPeak Analytics, WebTrends, Omniture’s Site Catalyst, etc.) can be used to track both regular and short URL-ed pages with a breakout of the traffic.
  • URL illustrations for highlighting available content in CrownPeak CMS Social Networking Tools for further dissemination and re-use.

Being a module of the SaaS CMS, The CrownPeak URL Shortener is available to all current customers as part of their existing SLAs with no extra licensing fees.

So how does this work, given that Crownpeak is a supply side (ie, baked) CMS, and doesn't ever directly interact with users?

I'd be very curious to hear from someone with some knowledge of the new tool (which does seem somewhat useful, if not a bit redundant).

Ed....

First off, thanks for noticing that we're a publishing based system (I actually love your term "supply side"....)

We recognize that it's YAUS (yet another url shortener) and we're certainly not out to corner the market there. What we noticed was a few things.

1. With the recent scare of Tr.im and the general uncertainty (yes I know it's relative) of the future direction of the .ly shorteners - we felt like we wanted to introduce a service for our clients that would fall under the same SLA and service agreement as their content management service. Also one that would be integrated directly with their analytics (Bit.ly has analytics but it's separate).

2. Many of our clients need to employ workflow before publishing out to the Social Networks (see our press release on that) and this is a nice ancillary service to that - where they can actually see the shortened URL prior to it being published and going through workflow.

3. Archiving purposes. Ever try and get a list of ALL the URL's you've shortened through the different services... To their credit bit.ly gives you the ability to go back through time - but again, many of our customers would like to see it within their CMS interface.

And, it's just an option... there for clients that want to use it - and for those that want to use Bit.ly or others - they certainly still can.

So, quite frankly - it just felt like the right thing to do.

To answer your question directly - the service works just like the others - as a re-direct service. So, we don't ultimately have to host the web content. It works on content the CMS publishes out - and then just alligns that shortened URL to that published URL whether or not CrownPeak hosts it. Theoretically, clients can use it for content that they don't manage either - but I'm getting long so I'll leave it at that.

Hope that's helpful...
