The team at open source content management provider, XOOPS has released the latest version of its platform. Although the release has a minor version number update to 2.5.4, the enhancements are major if you care about ease of use.

XOOPS, but Easier to Use

The latest version of PHP-based XOOPS includes several defect fixes and version updates to multiple open source libraries like PHPMailer and the TinyMCE WYSIWYG content editor. These changes are beneficial, but the big news is updates to the user interface.  XOOPS had made a significant effort to convert its user interface to a consistent look and feel. Going forward, one module will be the official base for all modules supported by XOOPS. According to XOOPS representatives, the new, more consistent user experience should drive:

  • Decreased training and support costs
  • Reduced development time and costs
  • Reduced maintenance costs
  • Increased customer satisfaction

The XOOPS team isn’t stopping with enhancing the user interface. The next release will focus on combining the most popular XOOPS modules into a single basic module installation pack. The pack is available in beta now for testing. The change will likely be a welcome addition for new users that want to get up and running fast since there are over 1,000 themes and modules available for XOOPS.

Although XOOPS does not receive as much press as Drupal or Joomla!, it is quite widely used. The open source platform has managed to thrive for a decade. Users like the flexibility of the module-based platform. The core includes a limited set of features, but the platform can be expanded using one of its many modules which can be activated using the platforms administrative interface.
