Lookout Microsoft! Firefox Tops IE 6
35.4% versus 34.9%
Those numbers are cause celebre for every open source advocate and Microsoft hater across the globe.
According to the most recent set of browser usage statistics from W3Schools, Firefox has captured 35.4% of the browser market as compared to 34.9% for Internet Explorer version 6.
As exciting as this news is, the trends show that it was only a matter of time before Firefox took the lead in the race between the two most widely deployed browsers in the world.
Is Microsoft concerned? Probably more than they would ever admit. Regardless of the viability of these statistics, the Firefox development team deserves some major kudos for bringing some much needed competition to the web browser space.
How worried should Microsoft be about their declining marketshare and how satisifed should the Mozilla Foundation be with their growth? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Similarly to Paul Topping's comment. While FF has grown from 30% to 34%, IE6's losses have been more than offset by IE7's gains.
While it's interesting that FF has individually surpassed either IE 6 or 7. A more accurate analysis would be to compare all of IE to all of FF, or to do a version to version comparison rather than comparing a single version to an aggregate number.
These are not overall percentages, just what site visitor's are using on a site that is entirely for web savvy & engaged users and developers. Much as I'ld love to celebrate, it's not realistic to think that the general populous statistics would be reflective of w3schools users. It seems you didn't read the small print at the bottom of that page, or you are just wishing to create some controversy. Nice try :(
Posted by: tyGos on October 23, 2007 1:50 PMNever use W3schools data for stats! That's as silly as using the stats for Mozilla's plugin directory - there's an over representation of developers and early adopters there.
Another source for "global" statistic is theCounters monthy summaries for all sites using their visitor tracking code.
Of course there might be an over representation of hobbyist's websites and English speaking visitors, but according to this page (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2007/December/browser.php) Firefox as of December 2007 only reaches a 14% market share...

Adding all the IE columns together we get 57.2%, while adding the Firefox and Mozilla columns we get 36.6%, so IE is still winning even here.
