In April amidst iPad mania, Woodwing began creating digital magazines for the tablet device. Since then, they’ve released updates designed to help publishers create iPad Apps. This month WoodWing Software released Version 1.5 of its Digital Magazine Tools for iPad.

This update offers several new features, including the ability for users to share content via Twitter, Facebook or email; access app statistics and push notifications that allow publishers to gain insight into their readers’ needs; and the availability within the Reader App to send push notifications of news based upon readers’ interests.
These features go beyond creating a digital experience and capitalize on sharing and evolving the current one. Now that iPad apps are here to stay (so it seems) and have a loyal following, publishers need to focus their attention to keeping and attracting new users.
Evolving the Reader Experience
Version 1.5 also offers a host of other functionality aimed at enhancing the reader and subscription experience, including the ability to filter issues within an app, bundle sub-issues into one issue; and include background audio, video and slide show rotation.
The new update also features a new product called Content Station Free Edition, which lets users in an editorial management capacity view the overall progress of a print publication using Content Station's Publication Overview for free.
As much as this release celebrates new functionality and customization, it also highlights the number of new customers that have signed on. Magazines from all over the world have signed up, including the Russian edition of Cosmopolitan, and a Swiss cooking magazine called Betty Bossi.
With two major releases in less than two months, I think it’s safe to say that the iPad app marketplace is at a place where publishers can shift their focus away from the creation of apps and towards the management and evolution of apps.
