Akumina founders Ed Rogers and Steven Sherkanowski just hired a colleague from their Ektron days — and apparently have plans to recruit more of the old team.
David Maffei, who worked at Ektron from 2005 to 2011, is Akumina's new chief revenue officer. Maffei was most recently vice president of sales at Carbonite. Before that, he was SVP of global business development at Bridgeline Digital.
"I'm beyond pumped," Maffei told CMSWire. "This software focuses on the two key things Ektron never did: quality and user experience."
Nashua, N.H.-based Akumina is best known for its SharePoint web solutions.
Rogers and Sherkanowski, CEO and COO, respectively, founded the company after they both left Ektron in 2011. At Ektron, Rogers was COO and Sherkanowski was vice president of marketing.
Fantasy Business Lineup
During his six years at Ektron, Maffei built a global sales organization that grew total company bookings from $7 million to $50 million. Maffei thinks it was a high point in Ektron's history — and tapping some of the best and brightest from that team could benefit Akumina today.
"You can expect a few additional key members of the 'old band' to find their way back into the fold. This time we go for gold," he said.
Maffei said the opportunity at Akumina was too good to pass up, despite an "amazingly stable job" at Carbonite.
"The software is solid. Ali Riaz is the real deal. Ed and I did so much at Ektron — and we're so much smarter now. This gives me a chance to swing for the fences and a big seat at the table," he said.
Growth and Strategic Relationships
As CRO, Maffei will be responsible for leading the growth of Akumina’s global revenue, both direct and through the channel, as well as developing strategic business relationships across the Microsoft ecosystem.
"Microsoft has some of what I would call A-List partners. We are going to go into them fast and hard right off the bat, and cultivate many of these relationships that already exist from the last decade," he said.
Rogers described Maffei as a dynamic leader who can build teams that drive revenue growth as well as client loyalty. “Akumina is in a unique position to disrupt how the world looks at SharePoint. David’s extensive experience with the CMS marketplace as well as the Microsoft partner ecosystem makes him a perfect fit for Akumina as we look to rapidly grow,” Rogers said.
While at Carbonite, Maffei was in charge of the company’s direct and channel sales teams as well as the channel marketing organization all of which produced significant revenue growth and channel-industry awareness through single and multi-tier distribution channels.
Maffei has received numerous honors and awards, including 2015 CRN Channel Chiefs, 2015 The VAR Guy’s Top 50 Channel Influencers, 2014 CRN Top 100 Sales Executives and ranked 3rd overall in the 2015 Talkin’ Cloud 100 Honorees.
