Vorsite continues its pursuit of connector technologies for Microsoft SharePoint and enterprise content management systems with the announcement of a new product in its suite of enterprise search and ECM connector solutions.

With the new solution, ActiveResults, it should be easier to search, find and manage information scattered across multiple locations — e-mail servers, ECM systems, file servers, intranets, desktops, etc. — as in a typical enterprise content management scenario.

Gilbane recently produced a research paper entitled: Information Workplace Platforms: Oracle vs SharePoint which has some interesting findings on which of these two ECM platforms is the best choice for an organizations information lifecycle.

The report findings are based on research on a number of companies who reviewed both platforms for their Information Management needs and what their final decisions turned out to be.

So MOSS has been attacked for its web content management, lack of social networking features, its blogging and wiki functionality, and its fitness as a public facing Web CMS …hmmm not much else they can go after is there?

At the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston this week, Microsoft was the only one announcing new products and services. Korea based Fasoo.com announced a new Digital Rights Management solution for MOSS called the DRM ONE for SharePoint.

This SharePoint as a service thing has been in the works. Previously we had a chance to talk with Tom Rizzo, Redmond’s Director of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, just after the official announcement at the SharePoint Conference 2008 about the why fores and the hows.

Now we’ve got the scoop on pricing, including how Microsoft’s partners are getting compensated for potentially loosing integration business. The short story is that Redmond is walking through the doors of change, but doing its best to keep the channel in the loop and incented to generate business.

Ever since its release, there have been questions about SharePoint’s (MOSS’) fitness as a web content management solution (see our article series on MOSS WCM).

While the jury may still be out on this question, it does not appear to be deliberating on the question of SharePoint’s social features. Microsoft is continuing to improve its community features, they have also been working closely with a partner, Telligent, who can provide this functionality as a direct SharePoint integration.

Funny thing is, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen these two products doing the tango. SharePoint Solutions has a service offering that does the exact same thing.

NewsGator Technologies was one of the nine companies who announced product integrations with Microsoft SharePoint at the Enterprise 2.0 conference last week. For these guys though it wasn’t “breaking” news, as they have been talking about the latest version of Social Sites for a few months now.

Not all vendors out there believe that you should be able to move back and forth between Lotus Notes and SharePoint. AvePoint, provider of SharePoint infrastructure and administration management solutions, continually brings to market migration tools to move content from another product to SharePoint. Their latest migration tool is the DocAve Lotus Notes Migrator.

Remember those guys who figured out how to hack Vista to allow you to run your SharePoint environment directly on the desktop and not within a vm? Well they are hanging out at Microsoft TECH-ED NORTH AMERICA 2008 this week and they have a product announcement that may interest many SharePoint developers.

It’s called Bamboo MashPoint and it’s a free data integration platform for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Note that important point — it’s for WSS3.0 which means you can start developing and integration enterprise applications into WSS without the need of MOSS and the Business Data Catalog.

The Enterprise 2.0 conference has kicked into full swing and Microsoft seems to plan on taking center stage. They have already laid out a number of new announcements that give it’s flagship content management system SharePoint an overflow of social networking options.

Content is a big deal these days, in case you haven’t noticed. However, its exponential growth over the years has left some businesses struggling. IBM has stepped up its game by unveiling their integrated approach to helping organizations manage enterprise content with software that helps control and manage all types of content created and shared by workgroups across an organization.

It’s called a Business Content Services strategy, and it’s designed to help businesses of all sizes cope with the rapid growth of content, including business documents that have been created both individually or collaboratively across diverse and even global workgroups.
