Can Newspapers Survive Without Associated Press?
Published on Sep 26, 2008 in Web PublishingCan a newspaper exist without publishing syndicated news content?
Early this month, The Star-Ledger of Newark, New Jersey, put this question to the test with a one-day boycott of The Associated Press news. The print issue relied primarily on stories by staff members, as well as Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, McClatchy-Tribune News Service and several smaller Advance Publication papers in New Jersey.
After the one-day experiment, The Star-Ledger was back to publishing AP news. While the boycott may have been inspired by a need to prove independence from the world’s largest news-gathering source, it also may have been fueled by the rate increase the AP is implementing in January 2009.

Its chronology of partnerships is getting too long to list, but trust me, it’s distinguished enough to include big names like Reuters, Clickability and Citizen Image, among others.
Add an English accent to the mix and you’ve got their latest affiliation. BBC Motion Gallery, the footage licensing division of the BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, has announced that it will distribute its content globally to the over 3,500 members of the Mochila marketplace.

Mochila is again on the move. The online media marketplace for text, photo, and video content just introduced an application programming interface for Syndication.
This API gives publishers the ability to automatically connect their content management and web publishing systems to Mochila’s high-quality rights-managed content.
Members have the option to customize real time feeds through this open standards XML-based API using multiple parameters including keyword, category, byline, and source.
By connecting with Mochila’s API, members have the potential to provide millions of their monthly visitors with enhanced search functionality that includes relevant information from the Mochila content database.
The first publisher to take advantage of this new application is Farlex, Inc.
Known for its TheFreeLibrary.com and TheFreeDictionary.com sites, Farlex has begun to integrate with Mochila and use the Mochila API to enhance the content experience for its users.
Mochila is certainly making it easy for publishers to acquire “high-quality content” – and is just another way Mochila has demonstrated its dedication to evolving and challenging the traditional way of syndicating content.

In September, Reuters became a premier content provider. And Belo, one of the nation’s largest media companies, followed suit as a premier content syndicator.
Not to be outdone, Citizen Image, a user-generated “photojournalist” firm, joined Mochila as yet another premier content provider in October.
We’re well into our last month of 2007, and Mochila has announced still more partnerships and services. Frankly, I don’t know how they do it.

The new tie-in will enable Mochila users to utilize Gigya’s Wildfire technology to distribute content in widget format.
Gigya is already partnered with numerous content providers including MetaCafe, Gaia, and c|net amongst others. These widgets enable viral connectivity between available content and the other half of Gigya’s partnership family, which consists of just about all of the popular social networks.
One-click posting functionality lets Gigya users share content without leaving the content provider’s site. Moreover, the widgets are particularly designed with a view to viral distribution.
Have a butcher’s at this one, and you will get the picture:

If you are already part of the Mochila marketplace, grab a widget and spread the love!
Citizen Image Joins Mochila's Swelling Content Club
Published on Oct 2, 2007 in Web PublishingCitizen Image, a user-generated “photojournalist” firm, has just joined Mochila as yet another premier content provider.
We always thought the term “premier” had something to do with being either first or exclusive. In Mochila’s case, the title has little significance in either respect. Somebody should mail a dictionary in the company’s direction.
In any event this most current partnership — building upon recent liaisons with Reuters and Belo, also premier content providers — is supposed to demonstrate how Mochila is changing the online content syndication or advertising marketplace or some similar thing.
Citizen Image will participate in AdMatch, which enables online publishers to both buy and syndicate content at no cost, in exchange for a percentage of the accompanying ad revenue.
CEO Keith McAllister of Mochila calls the Citizen Image relationship “a tremendous step towards the growth of our photo library […] indicative of the demand for all forms of content, professional and user generated.”

Last month we reported that Mochila, the first global online media marketplace for print, video, and photo content, announced a partnership with Clickability. This development created “a broader distribution channel for client content” and “an outlet to earn money via Mochila’s innovative AdMatch program.”
With access to Clickability’s clients, including NBC, CNN, Editor & Publisher, and the Wall Street Journal, who would have thought the pot could get any sweeter?
Here’s a big lesson for us: the pot can always get sweeter. On Monday Mochila announced that Reuters, the global information company, has joined as one of its premier content providers.
