So what do we think of the new Metro (oops ... we can’t use that word anymore, can we? It is now "Windows 8 style UI") stylings in SharePoint 2013? Like it? Love it? I’ll be honest, I’m not sure. I’m not sure end users are going to enjoy it.

Ah summertime: days at the beach, sand beneath your toes, water lapping the shore and our thoughts turn to ...SharePoint. SharePoint?

This week kicked off our month long focus on all things SharePoint with some thoughts on its use in today's social enterprise, its capabilities (or lack thereof?) as a Web Content Management platform and some confusing nomenclature in the latest version. 

Digital Marketing was still on our minds though, with some ideas on how to focus your content marketing and some examples of bad content to put out on social media.

It's here, the public preview of SharePoint 2013 and guess what? Microsoft has made some significant enhancements to its web content management capabilities. But is it enough? Is SharePoint really a serious WCM contender? That's our question for this discussion point. Here's what the experts said.

In the world of Social Enterprise vendors, everyone wants to be a “platform.” Subsequently, it’s rare to hear an ISV talk about the platform it uses to create a social application other than its own. And yet, Microsoft SharePoint often comes up in discussions of all sorts of Social Enterprise applications. Several companies are using the sharing, collaboration and workflow capabilities of Microsoft SharePoint to provide the basic underpinnings of their social applications.

While Metalogix has made a name for itself already with migration and lifecycle products for SharePoint, it doesn’t appear to be happy at the speed at which migration takes place. The result is the integration of Migration Manager for SharePoint -- File Share Edition, with its file share solution StoragePoint.

The recent beta release of SharePoint 2013 brought with it many things. One of those was "apps."

What a week! Yesterday, Microsoft Azure in W Europe went down, Google Talk went silent and Twitter had a major outage.

Cap that off with Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Zinga stock spirals and one can't be blamed for thinking now is the perfect time to take a looooong vacation -- maybe it'll all be shiny and happy again when you get back.

NewsGator has announced a new initiative to bring enterprise-class social computing to four verticals -- manufacturing, financial services, retail/consumer packaged goods and telecommunications.  

It’s hard to count how many file transfer or sync applications there are on the market at the moment. Even still, SpringCM has announced the release of another one. The differentiator here, SpringCM CEO Chris Junker told CMSWire, is that this is truly a business application.

SharePoint was originally developed as a response, albeit a very weak one, to IBM’s Websphere software, which quickly became the leading enterprise portal solution. However, the mighty Microsoft, never one to rest on its laurels, decided to chase the leader by pouring billions of dollars into SharePoint and has arguably displaced Websphere as the category leader, while IBM has allowed Websphere Portal to plod along with comparably little fanfare, or investment.

It's summer and slow everywhere. However, OpenText has still managed to upgrade RightFax making faxes by internet easier, Colligo extends the reach of Briefcase enabling Apple devices access to SharePoint, Quest has also been busy around SharePoint making it easier to access from Outlook, while Panasonic releases a new document scanner for SMBs.

The public beta of SharePoint 2013 is now available for download. Like everyone, we found lots of interesting things in this new version. Here are a few of our favorite things.

UpSync has released version 3.0 of its cloud-based software, with new tools for creating mobile presentations, managing content and delivering HTML5 apps.
