Xythos is a provider of on-premise and hosted (SaaS) document management solutions for organizations both large and small. Their hosted product has a somewhat unique history in that is was designed and developed from the very beginning as a web-based service.

The SaaS version of their document management product, launched in December 2006, is the software we've got in our sights today. In keeping up with the social networking craze of Web 2.0, Xythos Software has released two new enterprise software suites: Xythos Enterprise Document Management and Digital Locker 7.0. These software suites feature enhanced business process automation and interoperability features along with support for all your favorite Web two-point-oh social networking features like Wikis, content tagging and RSS feeds.

Xythos have announced three significant updates today. Their SaaS document management workhorse, Xythos on Demand, has been reshod; while impending updates for Digital Locker and document manager Enterprise Document Management Suite have also been announced.

Alan Pelz-Sharpe, CMS Watch's leading enterprise content management analyst, recently spoke of the SaaS ECM Dilemma.

To quote, "I have no problem telling buyers that SaaS may be worth considering, but actually going as far as recommending they pursue a SaaS option is still something of a stretch for me."

Seeking to add panache to the seemingly slow world of document management, Xythos has just updated Xythos on Demand 1.6, a SaaS document management service.

The clever folk at Northwestern University have developed an open source application able to manage the exchange of content between the Xythos basic content services product and the popular Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS).

As the software as a service (SaaS) field heats up, some vendors and customers are finding creative ways to implement SaaS projects.

Xythos have launched one of the first software as a service (SaaS) document management and collaboration services targeted at the small, medium enterprise market. Xythos On Demand, as its called, aims at trimming costs while facilitating good document housekeeping and easy collaboration. It sure ain't free like SharePoint, but then installing Microsoft's bundle of MOSSy fun isn't exactly a few clicks away either.
