When thinking of a mobile workforce people typically envision sales team “road warriors” or “Knowledge Workers” operating out of expensive cars or on planes, armed with flashy laptops, tablets and portable projectors. What we forget is that there are many remote, dispersed and mobile workers in far less glamorous or high wage roles. They remain outside the office environment for weeks or even months on end, performing what are often mission critical roles in the field, alone and with very little employer engagement.

Disruption can be seen as a force for good or evil. On the one hand the business world celebrates the disruptive effects new social business technologies are having on the status quo -- in everything from marketing and customer service to recruitment and sales. On the other, when it comes to internal collaboration and communication, social business software (SBS) is seen as disruptive in that other sense of the word -- a distraction from the job at hand.

Microsoft bought out the enterprise social network company Yammer, for a reported US$ 1.2 billion last June, announcing plans to add Yammer to its SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 application. It has also been selling Yammer packages at such a low price point that only massive sales will recoup its investment.
Microsoft clearly thinks that they are on a big business software winner by acquiring Yammer.
