This week there are a number of upgrades and releases following the July 4th celebrations, including an upgrade to Kofax’s TotalAgility offering and an upgrade to Clearwater’s HIPAA security assessment products. Axceler offers a new program for SharePoint governance, while QlikTech buys Expressor.

Axceler, a provider of Microsoft SharePoint governance, administration and migration solutions, is releasing version 4.6 of its ControlPoint governance/administration product. The latest upgrade to ControlPoint includes a governance policy manager, as well as enhanced mobility and functionality for Microsoft Project sites.

According to the initial results of a Microsoft SharePoint governance survey commissioned by Axceler, more than two-thirds of the respondents consider SharePoint governance to be extremely or very important to their organizations. Yet nearly half of those same respondents confirmed that SharePoint governance policies do not exist or are undefined.

It’s been a slow start to the year in GRC, but it looks like one where e-Discovery is going to play a major role, at least according to Nuix. Axceler and MetricStream have both entered partnerships with Jornata and Qualys, while EntropySoft has released a new connector with ZyLab for better e-Discovery.

GRC releases this week are dominated by the SharePoint conference, but there have been a couple of interesting acquisitions too with IBM announcing that it is buying Q1 Labs for enhanced security and what looks like the start of a serious move to develop its security division, while McAfee, recently acquired by Intel, has announced it is buying Nitro.

While the buzz and excitement around the launch of SharePoint 2010 is now firmly in the past, the reality of working with it is now becoming a daily problem. We say problem in the sense that there is still a very steep learning curve for many enterprises and users before the full capabilities can be released. Metadata in SharePoint 2010 is a good case in question.
