This week in the document management world, the build up to the release of SharePoint 2013 continues, but governance is still an issue. Meanwhile, Laserfiche has added cursive scanning through Parascript, OpenText appoints a new CMO, Hannon Hill upgrades to v7.2, while Nuance also upgrades its scanning capabilities.

The buildup to the release of SharePoint 2013 continues. One of the issues that was widely discussed around the 2010 release was governance and SharePoint environments. This time, with so much more data under the bridge -- and more and more people using SharePoint -- governance will be certainly be a hot topic once again.

A variety of IT vendors debuted add-on solutions that bring functionality including mobile, cloud and collaboration features to SharePoint at last week’s SharePoint Conference held in Las Vegas, NV. Solution providers making noteworthy announcements included Workshare, Colligo, Nintex and Axceler.

SharePoint 2013 was always going to be the focus of the SharePoint conference, which means that Yammer, and its relationship to SharePoint was also going to be a big issue. Axceler has announced a couple of new solutions that demonstrate where this might all be going.

There’s just nothing like seeing a couple of old hands get together for a common cause. That’s what’s happened today with the announcement that Webtrends and Axceler are joining forces to help another old pardner -- SharePoint.

This week there are a number of upgrades and releases following the July 4th celebrations, including an upgrade to Kofax’s TotalAgility offering and an upgrade to Clearwater’s HIPAA security assessment products. Axceler offers a new program for SharePoint governance, while QlikTech buys Expressor.

Axceler, a provider of Microsoft SharePoint governance, administration and migration solutions, is releasing version 4.6 of its ControlPoint governance/administration product. The latest upgrade to ControlPoint includes a governance policy manager, as well as enhanced mobility and functionality for Microsoft Project sites.

According to the initial results of a Microsoft SharePoint governance survey commissioned by Axceler, more than two-thirds of the respondents consider SharePoint governance to be extremely or very important to their organizations. Yet nearly half of those same respondents confirmed that SharePoint governance policies do not exist or are undefined.

It’s been a slow start to the year in GRC, but it looks like one where e-Discovery is going to play a major role, at least according to Nuix. Axceler and MetricStream have both entered partnerships with Jornata and Qualys, while EntropySoft has released a new connector with ZyLab for better e-Discovery.

GRC releases this week are dominated by the SharePoint conference, but there have been a couple of interesting acquisitions too with IBM announcing that it is buying Q1 Labs for enhanced security and what looks like the start of a serious move to develop its security division, while McAfee, recently acquired by Intel, has announced it is buying Nitro.

While the buzz and excitement around the launch of SharePoint 2010 is now firmly in the past, the reality of working with it is now becoming a daily problem. We say problem in the sense that there is still a very steep learning curve for many enterprises and users before the full capabilities can be released. Metadata in SharePoint 2010 is a good case in question.

It’s been a good week for SharePoint migration, especially for those looking to migrate to SharePoint in Office 365, so it’s appropriate that we close the week with one more migration tool, this time from Axceler (news, site)  which has released FileLoader for SharePoint 2010.

This week there is upgraded SharePoint governance from Axceler, Xerox looks at the value of technology in law firms, Clearwell offers an e-Discovery game on Facebook to match Farmville, Bridgeway upgrades its enterprise management suite and Epiq buys Encore.

This week RSA identifies a number of new trends that will increase the pressure on companies to look to the cloud for new GRC solutions. While security concerns have always been a concern in cloud deployments, there is no shortage of companies like Agiliance to offer solutions for this, while Applied Discovery has added document review to its hosted services.
