Big Data, 2014-12-August-Soap-Bubble.jpgIf I had a dollar for every time I’ve written about a company that promises to deliver “big data for all” or “big data no data scientist required” or some variation thereof, I’d be rich.

OK, maybe not rich, but I could foot the bill for a pretty nice dinner.

Big promises and big ambitions aren’t a bad thing. After all, if technology vendors are hard at work trying to make data driven insights accessible to more people, then maybe everyone from medical researchers to retailers to school teachers will be able to leverage big data to make the world a better place, right?

The Enterprise of the Future: Not as Cloudy as You Think?

The enterprise is “all in” on the (public) cloud, right? That’s certainly what all the hype leads us to believe.

After all, hardly a week goes by without Amazon, Google or Microsoft dropping their prices as they race to the bottom in the cloud wars. Not only that but there are also a host of celebrity-like CEO’s such as Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, Amazon’s Werner Vogels and Box’s Aaron Levie. They’re constantly in front of crowds preaching cloud-only gospels.

And there are the more recently converted to consider as well, such as IBM’s Ginni Rometty, who bought Cloudant, Silverpop and SoftLayer over the past 18 months and launched the IBM’s cloud Marketplace in April. Never mind SAP’s Bill McDermott, who started to refer the company he now single-handedly reins as “the cloud company”.

But all of that being said, there’s a newer trend in the enterprise now taking hold that indicates that the future may actually be hybrid. It seems that some managers don’t want or can’t have their data floating around “in the heavens” for reasons of security and compliance reasons, despite the cost savings.

As part of the growing movement toward encrypting web data, Google announced this week that it will boost the search status of web sites that use HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) to encrypt data, shedding more light on its own motivations to lock and further anonymize  the web.

BlueConic Reemerges

Some spinoffs come off as a desperate ploy to hold onto audiences. Did we really need The Golden Palace after The Golden Girls finished?

Others hold their own next to the original. The Mary Tyler Moore Show came from Lou Grant. The Daily Show begat both The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report.

BlueConic falls into the latter category. Four years ago, web CMS provider GX Software introduced it as a complimentary web engagement solution. In the years that followed, BlueConic broke off as an independent entity, received $3 million in Series A funding from Boston-based Sigma Prime Ventures, moved its headquarters and two of its chief executives to Boston.

So why don't we hear more about it?

“We experiment on human beings,” so said Christian Rudder, co-founder and president of matchmaking site OKCupid in a blog post.

You might have thought that he and his colleagues work tirelessly as data scientists trying to help Romeos of this world find their Juliets … and sometimes, they do.

But they’ve done other things, too. Like tell their customers that they’re 90 percent matches when, in truth, the likelihood was closer to 30 percent.

Why’d they do that, you may be wondering. To test the power of suggestion is the short answer. And it turns out that it’s pretty powerful.

People who were told they should like each other did, even though statistically, that shouldn’t have been the case. “The mere myth of compatibility works just as well as the truth,” Rudder wrote.

Pivotal, Hortonworks and a New Hadoop Management Standard?

Gartner analyst Merv Adrian wrote an interesting blog post earlier this year titled “Hadoop is in the Eye of the Beholder.” In it, he posed an interesting question. What is Hadoop?

We’re not going to rehash his argument.  It’s a fine and even funny post. You should read it. But if you don’t, suffice it to say that he concluded that it’s not a question that’s easily answered. As a result, if you’re an enterprise that is “doing Hadoop,” “buying Hadoop,” or “shopping for Hadoop,” what exactly are you talking about?

Startup Offers Free Collaboration Option for Any Web Page

Just as Microsoft blends Yammer into Office365, a startup is offering a free service to add a Facebook-like collaboration tool to any web page.

Lifestreams Technologies, a 2-year-old company based in New Haven, Conn., said the widget can be used on any intranet or public-facing website by adding a snippet of code to the html.

"Most websites today are relatively static," said Peter Prosol, business development director for the 10-person SaaS firm. "You'll find pictures and images and text, but it's more or less as it is. It doesn't change much. But adding a timeline to your site ... it lets you be more dynamic, add new content, refresh and be a little more interactive and engaging to the user."

Microsoft Kicks Oracle's Big Data Butt

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison must be feeling the heat, Forbes reports that the world’s highest paid CEO lost $1.9 billion of his wealth last year.

There, there Larry, no need for crocodile tears, you’ve got your very own Hawaiian island, an America’s Cup winning yacht, a 23 acre estate that is worth $200 million, as well as a dozen other homes in places like Malibu, Calif., Lake Tahoe, Newport, R.I. and Kyoto, Japan. Never mind the fleet of exotic cars and the golf tournament you own.

It’s no wonder that your company isn’t the market-maker it once was. With all those toys and an estimated $49 billion of wealth, who wouldn’t be just a little bit distracted?
