Launchpad Takes Off Into Open Source Space

launchpad_logo_09.png Canonical (news, site), commercial sponsor of the well-known Ubuntu Linux distribution, Bazaar, Launchpad and several other projects, has just opened up. Wide.

The company announced that Launchpad, a software development spring board, collaboration platform, and Ubuntu’s personal bug tracker (among other things), was being prepped to join the open source world about a year ago. The claim was that all but two components of the code would be set free in roughly 12 months. Today, not only has Canonical lived up to their time frame promise, they've also surprised the community with the release of the entire code base.

Alfresco and Ubuntu Are Bundled

In a software package it is. Alfresco announced that Canonical, the commercial sponsor of the Linux-based operating system Ubuntu, will offer Alfresco Labs 3 as part of its partner repository.

Ubuntu is an open source OS containing several applications — a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging, etc. And now - ECM functionality, too.

Feisty Fawn Leaps Into Virtualized Reality

This Thursday we witness the anticipated release Ubuntu Linux 7.04, known to Linux aficionados by code name Feisty Fawn. And the new components are feisty indeed: the aforementioned Fawn possesses virtualization features and improved installation management tools, courtesy of project sponsor Canonical.

The solution makes it possible to upgrade servers automatically while simultaneously granting admins the ability to control that process, letting them override decisions and enable task upgrades and dependency checking as-needed.
