With 2011 drawing to a close, we look at what we thought were some of the document management highlights of the year. There were also a couple of companies still busy like Nuxeo, which released v5.5, DocuLex, which released a dedicated solution for the real estate vertical, and CaseCentral which offered self-service e-Discovery. Advance RP also upgraded its storage.

 Later this month, Nuxeo users and partners will get a chance to exchange information -- and even phone numbers -- at Nuxeo World, which will be held in Paris on October 20 and 21.

OpenText (news, site), generally speaking, has had a good year, but the release of results this week that shows a 12% rise in profits for the fourth quarter may make it a tad uncomfortable.

Open source document management software provider Nuxeo (news, site) is continuing its tradition of making its enterprise content management easier to use for developers. The company has announced new versions of its case management framework, development studio and a connector for allowing Adobe Flex applications to integrate with Nuxeo.

We noted when Nuxeo (news, site) released its Case Management Framework last year that, while the case management framework is not exactly new in the world of ECM, it's nice. With this week’s release of v1.7, Nuxeo has added some nifty new abilities into a content management world, where case management is just about essential in many verticals, if not all.

Case management is proving to be an important means of delivering process improvement to solve critical business challenges, regardless of industry or type of process. Just a few examples include Chartis Insurance accelerating their loan application and underwriting response time, AEGON Financial Services improving their invoice processing, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security reducing costs of responding to information requests. While these examples are widely different, they share some common characteristics. This opens the opportunity to learn and leverage not just from other company best practices in your industry, but also from those in completely different industries -- a core principle of “knowledge brokering.”

The successful series Law & Order was based on stories “ripped from the headlines.” In this article, I continue my writings on adaptive case management by focusing on how it is being applied in the government sector to serve the public good. I think you’ll find these case management stories worthy of the great Law & Order franchise. 

You may recall, earlier this month, we reported that OpenText was buying Metastorm and that the deal was expected to close by the end of March. At the time, we couldn’t predict just how enthusiastic OpenText (news, site)  was about the deal, with the result that it has closed it this week.

When was the last time your work day went as anticipated? A predictable day with all data found on the first try, and a series of activities that occurred in a predefined well-mannered order?
