Would you move your business data and team conversations to a platform run by Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook advertising machine? While the Facebook for Business brand is nothing new, focused on providing a more effective advertising platform for businesses based on the social connections and information consumption of its 1.3 billion members, rumor has it that a new offering will target team and project-based collaboration under the brand Facebook@Work.
According to a new Financial Times report and related Business Insider analysis, the platform has been in development for years but is being piloted at a number of companies, and it "will allow employees to collaborate, edit documents, collect professional contacts, and chat with colleagues."

What are the differences between SharePoint governance in online versus on-premises deployments? This question comes up regularly at conferences and events -- administrators and business owners alike want to know if their organizations need to change their administration activities for the cloud. With many organizations either planning a move to the cloud or developing those plans, they need to know whether there are differences in what you can manage and how SharePoint is managed in the cloud.
Are there differences? Yes. Will these differences impact your existing governance policies and procedures? Most definitely.

Many people have singled out SharePoint's user experience (UX) as one of the main culprits in lagging adoption and engagement numbers since the launch of the platform. Arguably it wasn't until the 2010 version that Microsoft took targeted steps to remedy this, adding important usability improvements and social capabilities. It was also during the SharePoint 2010 release timeframe that the partner ecosystem grew to support design and UX. This expansion introduced new options for customers, as well as provided feedback and direction for Microsoft, leading to further enhancements in the SharePoint 2013 release, including mobile enhancements and the support of device channels.
But even with SharePoint 2013's focus on the presentation layer and ongoing UX developments inside of Office 365 -- such as deeper integration with Yammer, PowerBI and the Delve (formerly Codename Oslo) interface -- has it been enough to improve adoption and engagement?

The rise of social and collaborative networks has changed the nature of the business interaction. The inbox and the Rolodex have become foreign to us. We expect instant access, constant updates and alerts, and data about every aspect of our lives to be readily available. We expect common business activities to be automated, streamlined, easy. Many of our measurements for success in business (certainly from the information worker's standpoint) revolve around the quality of the user experience we receive -- or create for our customers.
When surrounded by a team of people, it is easy enough get the necessary help from others to work through a complex or confusing business process. However, as an employee in a remote office, most of your daily information worker activities are likely self-driven. Many of the interactions that require involvement from others, who may be located in another time zone, can take time and reduce your productivity while you are waiting. Suddenly it is not just about identifying the right person for an approval or feedback but about balancing their availability against your project and time constraints.

From all outward appearances, we seem to have turned a corner with SharePoint 2013 migrations. Compared to previous versions, SharePoint 2013 has experienced a relatively slow adoption cycle as organizations paused to understand the impacts of the new release -- and to understand, in many cases, their cloud strategies.
Migrations to the latest version seem to now be increasing speed. Since the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas earlier this year, my own observation is that more companies are approving budgets and updating plans, and with that movement and more firm cloud strategies in place, we are also seeing an increased interest in SharePoint Online and Office 365.

Everyone wants to understand the future roadmap of SharePoint. There is no shortage of content and discussion around Microsoft’s every move in the content management and collaboration space, with both angst and praise expressed about each individual feature and announcement. As with the idiom "not see the forest for the trees," focus too much on the short term features and you may lose sight of the broader SharePoint platform strategy.

The same can be said for reviews of SharePoint implementations. A common question from executives to the teams and stakeholders who own and manage SharePoint is "How productive are our end users in SharePoint?"

He travels the world to spread the good word of SharePoint, speaking at conferences, attending meetings, contributing articles. I suspect Christian lives in an alternative universe where there are more hours in the day than in yours or mine.

When I joined Microsoft back in 2006 to help build out the Microsoft Managed Services offerings -- a precursor to the SharePoint Online platform within Office365 -- I spent a good deal of time talking with customers and partners about improving the performance of SharePoint across multiple locations: from deployment and architectural best-practices, to content synchronization and WAN optimization.
I always loved the customer interactions, working directly with the end user and administrators, and pushing that feedback back to the product teams. In my current role as a technology evangelist, I spend a good portion of my time with customers and partners, listening to their experiences, providing guidance where I can, and doing my best to surface questions and issues when I don't know the answer.

Collaboration is not a tool; it is not a set of features. Collaboration has more to do with establishing communication patterns within your organization and across your partner and customer networks, so that these patterns soon become incorporated into the very fabric of your business.

Blame it on the Consumerization of IT, the "bring your own device" movement, the seemingly inescapable trend of all things moving toward the cloud, or the cyclical move from single-vendor solutions to best-of-breed (a cycle that seems to repeat itself every five to seven years). Regardless of these trends or cycles, collaboration environments within the enterprise are rapidly expanding.
