There’s no doubt that predictive coding is the next big thing in e-Discovery. While predictive coding aims to code, organize, and prioritize entire sets of electronically stored information (ESI) according to their relation to discovery responsiveness, privilege and designated issues before and during the legal discovery process, many e-Discovery vendors have been working hard to offer products and service that offer predictive analytical solutions.

It’s July and bound to be quiet. Even so, in the GRC space, AvePoint and KnowledgeLake have paired up for SharePoint 2010 content governance, Symantec has finally closed the deal with Clearwell, Aveska’s enterprise governance solution is in big demand, while Vista SP1 support has stopped so no more security upgrades there.

If things are slowing down on the run up to the holiday weekend, it was a busy week in GRC. Symantec research shows iOS and Android to be more secure than PCs, OpenText is offering archiving and records management of social content through Social WorkPlace, Cabinet NG digs deeper into the legal space and Clearwell looks at cloud computing and e-Discovery.

Social media is no longer just for the rest of us. As we’ve reported previously, industry after industry, no matter how regulated, wants to reap the benefits of social media without the burden of social media. Social collaboration is sexy. Records management isn’t. The same goes for e-Discovery. It’s only been in the past year or so that we’ve seen vendors within the e-Discovery space really tackle the issues that social media brings into the enterprise. Until then, they only predicted about its influence.

Nothing perks up a Friday like delving into the underbelly of the enterprise in an effort to reveal and analyze the growing impact of cloud computing and social media on electronic discovery. Thanks to a report released by Clearwell Systems, conducted in conjunction with analyst firm Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), we can do just that.

This week, IBM was at the enterprise 2.0 conference in Boston, where it launched IBM Connections, a social networking platform with real-time compliance capabilities, Verizon opens a new risk management service, Clearwell extends reach of e-Discovery and Cintas achieves NAID certification.

For companies that have been lured into a false sense of security by using enterprise search tools to comb through their growing repositories of online data, Clearwell says, not so fast. The e-Discovery vendor -- recently bought by Symantec -- has announced a few key enhancements to its identification and collection module designed to bring the next generation of targeted collection to e-Discovery.
 

Leaving aside any irritation about the timing of the announcement -- why Friday? --   the news that Symantec (news, site) has agreed to buy Clearwell for US$ 390 million has to be the deal of the week on all kinds of levels.

This week there is upgraded SharePoint governance from Axceler, Xerox looks at the value of technology in law firms, Clearwell offers an e-Discovery game on Facebook to match Farmville, Bridgeway upgrades its enterprise management suite and Epiq buys Encore.

This week in GRC, the issue of security features prominently with security issues around Android identified by Symantec, McAfee opens a new data center in the UK as part of its ongoing drive to provide content backup and security, Clearwell adds a legal hold module and ProofPoint releases a cloud-based email security and compliance package.

Clearwell (news, site) continued to build its e-Discovery platform this week with the release of a legal hold module that adds an automated hold processes to the platform, giving enterprises scalable, repeatable workflows that will track and manage all legal hold notices.

In GRC this week there have been a number of releases in the e-Discovery space, including a StoredIQ solution for SharePoint  and enhanced search across Clearwell's e-Discovery platform. There are also indications that we may be heading toward an e-Discovery standard. Meanwhile, both Viewpointe and Agiliance have issued new releases.

Recently we told you how corporations were facing more sanctions for electronic-discovery violations. As a result, companies are urged to step up their oversight of the e-Discovery process to improve the quality of the data searched, as well as provide more direct access to the data.

With the move to bring e-Discovery in-house well underway, one of the issues that is really going to cause problems is how to find data that is spread across numerous enterprise systems. For its part, Clearwell (news, site) is providing a solution by entering into an OEM agreement with EntropySoft, enabling its e-Discovery platform and tools to rummage around the silos of legacy systems.

This week in the GRC space, we look at e-Discovery in BPOS (and Office365), LiveOffice archives Salesforce Chatter, OpenLogic offers open source governance for agile developers and new research reveals how safe our smartphones really are. 

There have been a number of interesting announcements in the GRC space this week. First, we had the release of a new governance product from SOA to manage IBM’s WebSphere, followed by a physical records management release for SharePoint 2010 and Mimecast support for BPOS. In the meantime, Autonomy was making its move into the healthcare market.
