When you mention Facebook, most people immediately think “social network” (or perhaps “application overload”). Not many people will think “content management system.” Adrian Sutton, CTO at Ephox, spoke at Web Content 2008 today about the marriage of content management and Facebook. While the initial Facebook frenzy has somewhat cooled off these days (Adrian went so far as to call the unending list of invites to join groups and add 1,000 applications “a new form of spam”), there are some things that Facebook has done right, and which content management systems can learn from.

With the amount of information flowing through content management systems these days and the ease at which organizations are now able to upload, scan and otherwise get documents in their CMS, privacy has become a big concern. The last thing an organization needs is to have sensitive information about their customers released to the public.
Most CMS’s see this problem and some have resolved it by partnering with a company that provides redaction technology - Informative Graphics. Today, Informative Graphics have announced the latest release of their Redact-It Enterprise Server Software.

On May 20th, the CODiE’s were awarded at an Awards Gala in San Francisco, California. From the over 1,000 nominations from 600 companies, winners were chosen in a number of categories including software, content, education and corporate.
It should come as no surprise that Clickability won the award for Best Content Management Solution. They still have some work to do though to beat Saleforce.com as the Best Software as a Service Solution…

Enterprise Content Management vendor Vignette has announced it’s first quarter financial results and they are a bit lower than originally expected. The lower outlook is primarily a result of a decrease in license revenues which Vignette attributes to the a decrease in spending in the North American market.
With the US economy on a decline, will we see more ECM vendors making the same announcements over the next the year?

If you are a religious SharePoint follower then you’ve heard of Andrew Connell — known best as the expert on Web Content Management with SharePoint 2007.
Well Andrew and a team of other SharePoint experts have been hard at work writing a new book: Professional Professional SharePoint 2007 Web Content Management Development: Building Publishing Sites with Office SharePoint Server 2007 and it’s finally finished and getting ready for publication.
The book is aimed at developers who build publishing sites with SharePoint 2007 — something many believe is not easy. WCM is considered one of the weakest components of SharePoint. Andrew may argue this as he’s spent lots of time working on it, training people on it, talking about it at conferences. So this book should be the answer to many a dream…
A quick scan of the table content reveals much about the information that will be provided in the book. Some of the Chapters include:
- Embarking on Web Content Management Projects
- Minimal Publishing Site Definition
- Site Columns, Content Types and Lists
- Navigation
- Accessibility
- Leveraging Workflow
- Authoring Experience Extensibility
- Authentication and Authorization
- Implementing Sites with Multiple Languages and Devices
- Content Deployment
Definitely sounds like a book I’d like to read. You can preorder on Amazon or sit back and impatiently wait for the June release.
