SaaS vs. In-House DAM - Which is Right For You?

The choice between cloud-based and in-house DAM used to be easy. Between the high cost of cloud storage and bandwidth, and the limited capabilities of SaaS (software as a service) solutions -- the argument for in-house DAM was clear.

Cost is no longer the sole determining factor. Cloud computing and storage costs have lowered in the last few years, making SaaS a viable choice for many organizations. SaaS DAM vendors have responded to customer needs by offering new features and functionality that directly compete with the capabilities of in-house solutions -- such as integration tools for social media -- which places them squarely on the competitive playing field.

Gartner Names 5 Vendors That Make CRM Cool

2014-04-April-Cool-Cat.jpg

If you still have doubts whether customer relationship management (CRM) is trendy, hip and cool, put your mind at rest. Gartner just released a list of "cool" CRM vendors.

But notions of coolness aside, what's equally as interesting is the evidence of specialization among CRM vendors and the signals that point to their potential growth.

Connecting: Stealing Content and Other Copyright Issues

Connecting with Bill Sobel

The Internet has turned a lot of honest people into thieves. People who wouldn't dream of walking out of a retail store without paying for a pack of gum have no remorse about stealing online content. Pictures. Blog posts. Funny videos.

And that's turned copyright issues from "an obscure corner of the law" to "the subject of conversation at picnics and parties," said Christopher Kenneally, director of Business Development at the Danvers, Mass.–based Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a global licensing and content solutions organization.

Despite what many of us think in this age of incessant sharing, people who create “original works of authorship" — literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works — actually have rights. Under copyright laws in the US and other countries, you need permission from the copyright holder to reproduce, distribute, display or perform these works.

So much for making that great aerial picture of a tropical sunset you stumbled upon the background for your Facebook page.

Lost in the DAM

Lost in the DAMOften surprising to digital asset management (DAM) newcomers is that it can be easier to lose files inside a DAM than it is to lose files that aren't inside the DAM. Worse, the ways in which your content can become “digitally lost” in a DAM don’t require such notable events as equipment failures, thefts or destruction. This article covers some less obvious DAM considerations that lead to DAM users not being able to find the content they need.

OpenText Wants to Help Customers Connect with New Experience Suite

opentext1.jpg

Most businesses seem to understand it's important to create a consistent, multichannel digital presence — at least if the goal is to attract and retain customers. But that's easier said than done.

As the folks at OpenText explain, "The challenge is to extract value from managed content, optimize and personalize that content delivery and bridge the chaotic interactive world with the secure data repositories that reside behind the firewall." And don't forget to deliver these compelling and engaging experiences while adhering to all your established information governance policies and standards, OK?

No wonder why so many customer experience objectives fall flat — and why companies like OpenText are creating new solutions for delivering relevant, interactive experiences on screens of all sizes.

Why Images Don't Belong in Your DAM

Why Images Don't Belong in Your DAMMost organizations use digital asset management to manage images. It has always been this way and it will likely continue to be this way for some time. After all, images are the thing DAM does best.

But it’s time to stop using DAM to manage images because you could be doing so much more.

A Look at Picturepark's #LearnDAM Initiative

Given the proliferation of content marketing, it can be hard to find reliable non-vendor educational content on a specific subject. For David Diamond at digital asset management (DAM) vendor Picturepark, the answer at least for digital asset management (DAM) education lies in a hashtag.

CMSWire Top Contributors 2013 - David Diamond

ddiamond.jpgNot many companies would be brave enough to hire a man who writes arguments about why not to buy its software. But David Diamond speaks the truth about digital asset management (DAM) -- the good, the bad and the ugly. The DAM he writes of is an aspirational DAM, the one whose promise brought him to the industry, the one he still believes in and the one he pushes the industry to deliver. And by writing about it with humor, in plain, jargon-free language, he wins some champions of his cause along the way.

We're just happy for us (if not for him) that he always breaks his New Year's resolution.

A Look Back: DAM Trends from 2013

Many questions

DAM, it’s that time of year again – to look backward at the soon-to-be-ancient-history of the past year in digital asset management (DAM).

It's a broad topic. DAM refers to the rules and processes an organization puts in place to manage, retrieve and distribute their digital media, such as photos, videos, PDFs, presentations and documents. It's more than an asset repository, though. DAM provides support for key workflows such as approval loops and virtual collaboration that add value to their media assets.

So let's take a look at some key trends.
