There was a time when DAM was the dominion of marketing departments, but today every area of a business creates and needs access to digital assets. Unfortunately, the way most enterprises implement DAM Systems are falling short of meeting employee's needs.

Digital Asset Management software has been around for more than two decades. In fact, Photoshop 1.0 was released only a few years before the first commercial DAM software became available. Since those days, Photoshop has become so popular that the product name is now used as a verb by people who have never even used the program. By contrast, DAM remains something we must explain over and over.

Well, that DAM week is over. And, in recent digital asset management news, Netx combines with ConceptShare, ADAM 5 and TACTIC 4.0 emerge, DAMNY 2013 is now a memory and Brandworkz unveils multiple version outputting.

In an indication of digital asset management’s increasing integration into a larger marketing framework, DAM vendor ADAM Software has announced the release of its ADAM 5 platform. The company described the new platform as heralding “a new era of collaborative enterprise marketing” that does away with siloed components, and its press release doesn’t even use the term “digital asset management.” 

Southpaw Technology is out with version 4.0 of its open source TACTIC digital asset management software. The upgrade offers a variety of customization options, including a new plug-in architecture and configurable HTML5 themes. 

Two sessions at the DAMNY conference, currently taking place at the New York Hilton, intersect in their suggestion of a likely future path for digital asset management (DAM).

When is a digital asset management system like a good mixed drink? When it’s optimally integrated with other systems that act as complementary liquids do in a fine cocktail.

It’s hard to find anyone who brags about how many departmental silos they have, but, as noted by the Keynote Panel at the Henry Stewart DAM conference this week at the New York Hilton, plenty of silos still exist in companies managing digital assets. 

It’s been a DAM brief week. And, in digital asset management news, Nuxeo releases a desktop sync client, North Plains refreshes several of its key products, Parliament decides to help -- or not -- intellectual property orphans, and Google comes up with a clunky-sounding name for afterlife options. 

Digital asset management provider North Plains, which has been giving itself a major makeover in the last year, is now out with updates for its key products -- version 17.5 of media production environment Xinet, version 9.1 of digital asset management system Telescope and version 2.6 of brand management solution On Brand. The focus of the updates, the company said, is on improving interoperability, usability and efficiency. 

It’s been a DAM busy week, so let’s get started. In recent digital asset management news, America’s massive Digital Public Library opens its virtual doors, Daminion and Razuna update, Tandem unveils its cloud-based Vault and the DAMMYs open again for submissions. 

The DAM spring arrived in the last week, at least here in the eastern U.S. And, in digital asset management news, Yangaroo integrates with Pacific Media Tech, Picturepark hearts 2012, ADAM releases an update to its product information management system, Netflix hearts HTML5 and a digital asset to explain digital asset management. 

Digital asset management vendor ADAM has released PIMS 3.2, an update that links product information to marketing from within a centralized database.

DAM, that week went quickly. In recent digital asset management news, North Plains releases two Xinets, there’s a new Elvis, DAM can be valuable when it’s invisible, FocusOPEN has an update, SDL Tridon has a major new release, and a return to return on investment. 

In common with most types of business oriented software, DAM systems need to have business case that can demonstrate an opportunity to gain a positive ROI (Return On Investment). While all this is obvious stuff that you don't need an MBA to understand, proving an ROI case is harder than it might superficially appear.
