As the nature of the workplace changes, so does its tools. One tool that continues to change as the digital workplace becomes more collaborative, mobile and social is the productivity app.

With new technology constantly being added to the workplace environment, it's not always easy to know how well these changes are working. This is something that Chess Media aims to find out in an employee collaboration and work style solutions Future of Work Survey.

“Digital Workplace Trends 2013,” a report based on surveying 362 organizations worldwide, shows that digital workplaces are in very early days.

This week our contributors looked at both the big picture and the nitty gritty of the social enterprise to see what makes it tick. The psychologist's lens was held up to the Social Business and it withstood the scrutiny. Intranets were also put under the lens, but the diagnosis isn't so clear.  

We heard how records management still isn't getting the support it needs and how the best security plans can fail when vulnerabilities aren't understood.

There has been much buzz lately about the results from a study by McKinsey Global Institute, which estimated that knowledge worker productivity could potentially be increased with 20-25 percent with use of social technologies. Whether or not these figures are realistic or not, they point to the great potential for improving knowledge work and how social technologies can play a key role in unlocking that potential.

Today's workforce has a growing number of tools at their disposal to communicate, collaborate and get work done. But there is a concurrent increase in workflow complexity, which, left unmanaged, results in time lost and inefficiencies. It's time to bridge the gap between the two.
