Alert: What's Coming In Open Source CMS In 2010

Normally in this space we look back over the current month and forward into the next month at what the various open source CMS projects are up to. But rather than blindly putting out an update for January, we thought we'd look farther ahead into what everyone wants to accomplish throughout next year. Call it our open source 2010 predictions with less guesswork and high hopes.

DotNetNuke Partner Program Expands, Positive Sign for 2010

dotnetnuke_logo_2009.jpg DotNetNuke (news, site) is having a good year. They have picked up a new marketplace for their .NET open source Web CMS and application development framework, added several new editions to support commercial clients and beefed up their developer support.

Add to that the latest version of DotNetNuke (5.2) which includes some very feature friendly Telerik RadControls and you would say they deserve an "A" for effort.

But they have one more piece of news they want to share with all of us. And that is that their Fusion partner program has really taken hold since it was launched three months ago. In fact, the program now includes 9 Gold Partners and 6 Certified Partners.

The program enables solution providers to deliver implementation services around the professional editions of DotNetNuke, supports the company's push to be the most used .NET Web CMS on the market.

DotNetNuke has chosen to focus their efforts on being the back-end for managing web information -- the web application framework -- and not to specialize in any particular area of web content management (like Interactive Marketing).

Will this focus be the right move as s continues to be redefined and re-imagined? We'll be watching closely in 2010 to see how they do.

CodePlex Foundation Takes Orchard Web CMS Under Its Wing

New Orchard Open Source CMS Moves to CodePlex.orgA little update on Microsoft's open source Web CMS project, Orchard (news, site). Well, it wasn't actually Microsoft's project before and it's definitely not now.

Orchard has officially moved in CodePlex.org as the second project in the ASP.NET Open Source Gallery (the first was the ASP.NET AJAX Library). An official announcement on the new foundation's website says that Orchard is now licensed under the OSI-approved New BSD license.

Microsoft has made a three year committment which includes a full development team to the Orchard Project, which you can now follow on a new website.

There is still no set date for a beta release or a code release of any kind. You can view some of the code and documentation on the CodePlex website. But if you want to comment or contribute, you now have to follow the rules and guidelines of the CodePlex Foundation.

Interesting to note that the Orchard website is making it clear that Orchard is not competition for SharePoint or other open source .NET web content management systems like DotNetNuke. With Shaun Walker, Chief Architect and co-founder of DotNetNuke on the Board of Directors for CodePlex Foundation, we may very likely see some synergies arise sometime down the road.

Open Source CMS Market: Lights Beyond LAMP

Report: Open Source CMS Market Share 2009The web content management space is not homogeneous. And while the recently released Open Source CMS Market Share Report clearly highlighted the ongoing dominance of LAMP-based content management systems -- these systems are not the only game in town.

In this article I look at brand leaders who have chosen to build their content management software on the Java or .NET technology stacks. Systems with strong brand awareness and adoption rates include Alfresco, Jahia, Liferay and OpenCMS on the Java side, and DotNetNuke and Umbraco from the .NET camp.

Report: The Most Popular Open Source CMS, and Then Some

Report: Open Source CMS Market Share 2009Following on the heels of the 2008 Open Source CMS Market Share Report, this year we collaborated with water&stone to produce an improved 2009 version. The report is an interesting study of 20 dominant systems in the market. It's really not about which CMS is best, nor about relative comparisons beyond brand strength, sentiment and adoption patterns. We're aware of this.

Traditional and Social Media Analysis

What the study did was sniff around the nooks and crannies of our increasingly electronic and publicly broadcast lives and endeavor to quantify the relative brand strengths, brand sentiments and adoption patterns for the top 20 most popular content management products. In addition, we ran a survey on CMSWire.com a little ways back. With this tool we were able to directly pose questions to our readership -- and more than 1200 of you took to the task (thank you!).

This year's analysis looked at Alfresco, CMS Made Simple, DotNetNuke, Drupal, e107, eZ Publish, Jahia, Joomla, Liferay, MODx, OpenCms, phpWebSite, Plone, SilverStripe, Textpattern, TikiWiki, Typo3, Umbraco and WordPress.

Key Conclusions: 3 Dominate, Many Are Vibrant

What jumped quickly out is that The Big Three -- Joomla, WordPress and Drupal -- led the survey set across a wide range of measures. However, the top slots are not static, Joomla has gained market share over Drupal, and WordPress with its hosted version has what looks like a smoother path to adoption.

The report identifies less obvious stars. Alfresco, a vendor focused on both document management and web content management, performed well across a number of categories, and led the Java-based open source CMS race over its nearest rival, Liferay. DotNetNuke led the .NET-based open source CMS category, though Umbraco is up and coming.

The report goes on to identify reasons why DotNetNuke's position may soon be changing. In addition to naming the market leaders, the study identifies projects whose market share and brand metrics indicate they are at risk or facing a closing window of opportunity. A metric we found of particular interest was the product evaluation rates versus the adoption rates.

The 90+ page report is available for free and includes profiles of each of the systems covered.

DotNetNuke Adds Marketing, Strategy Experience via Board of Advisors

DotNetNuke Adds Marketing, Strategy Experience via Board of Advisors If keeping ahead of the posse in the web content management industry means responding quicker and more accurately than the rest to market moves, then DotNetNuke Corp (news, site) looks like it could be leading the charge for a while to come.

The open source Web CMS provider has just appointed a board of very experienced advisors that will try and peer into their crystal balls and see what product development and other technology issues are likely to be coming down the line future.

A kind of Macbeth’s witches of the tech industry with four witches instead of three, the new board consists of:

  • Frank Artale, Vice President of Business Development at Citrix Systems. Citrix provides virtualization, networking and software-as-a-service (SaaS) technologies.
  • Brice Snow, Founder and CEO of Snowcovered, the creator and architect of the largest and best known portal for buying and selling DotNetNuke extensions.
  • Andrew Aitkin, Founder and Managing Partner at Olliance Group, an open source business and strategy consulting firm.
  • Glen Winokur, Managing Director of Emerson Street Partners, who act as an advisory services and seed stage investment firm.

DotNetNuke does appear to have a knack of knowing what’s going to work. Remember that DotNetNuke won PacktPub 2008 award for the Overall Best Open Source CMS.

And with ongoing launches including the recent launch of DotNetNuke Elite and DotNetNuke Premier this month, it would probably take a witches coven to know where next to go.

CodePlex.org: An Open Source Foundation Funded by Microsoft

Microsoft Announces CodePlex.org, An Open Source Foundation It's been a busy couple of weeks in the news for Microsoft and its continued efforts towards interoperability. It started with news that Microsoft was selling some Linux patents to a third party -- the end result not looking really positive for them.

But it ended with the announcement of a new not-for-profit foundation based on the CodePlex brand.

DotNetNuke Offers New Editions, Developer Support for Web CMS

DotNetNuke Offers New Editions, Developer Support for Web CMS There's work happening over at DotNetNuke (news, site) these days. The open source web content management provider has not only switched up their marketplace for modules and add-ons, they've also come out with several new commercial products designed to make them a little extra money.

DotNetNuke Axes Their Marketplace, Picks Up Another

DotNetNuke acquires Snowcovered Microsoft .NET fan-kid DotNetNuke (news, site), provider of software for building .NET web sites and applications, recently picked up a fan of their own. Snowcovered, an online marketplace for DotNetNuke modules, skins, services, and other related products just joined forces (officially) with their favorite corporation.

The union is expected to create a stronger bond between the DotNetNuke platform and the Snowcovered online library of third party extensions. With healthier ties to enriching components, the DotNetNuke ecosystem will now likely provide better opportunities for independent software vendors and their users.

"This alignment will help increase the market reach of module and skin vendors, says Navin Nagiah, President and CEO of DotNetNuke Corp. “It will also make a wider variety of modules and skins more accessible to our user base." As for what’s in store for the team behind Snowcovered, founder and CEO Brice Snow will take on the roll of business advisor at DotNetNuke. "I look forward to rolling up my sleeves as a member of the DotNetNuke Corp. team and continuing my deep involvement with the DotNetNuke commercial ecosystem," he says.

DotNetNuke will gradually phase out the DotNetNuke Marketplace over the next few months. Current vendors are encouraged to create a Snowcovered account and move their offerings to Snowcovered during the transition period.
