Open source ECM platform vendor Nuxeo is having a busy week. Yesterday, it announced its pretty new interface for its subscription support portal, and today, the availability of its development environment. Christmas must be coming early for Nuxeo users.

Open source business intelligence provider Jaspersoft (news, site) has announced an open source business intelligence (BI) design tool for users of the popular Eclipse development environment. The tool is open source and allows Eclipse Java developers to build, secure and share reports free.

Nuxeo (news, site) has announced that its content repository technology, has been approved and will soon be provisioned by the Eclipse Foundation (news, site). The project even has a new, much tastier nickname than the official Eclipse Enterprise Content Repository Project -- Apricot -- and it's just in time for summer.

Nuxeo is putting its code where its mouth is. The open source document management vendor is contributing its content repository technology, Nuxeo Core to the Eclipse Foundation (news, site). The contribution is intended to spur the development of a CMIS-based content repository. Will this move yield a CMIS reference implementation whose popularity catches Apache’s JCR-based Jackrabbit?

German web content management vendor Innovation Gate Gmbh decided earlier this year to rebrand version 5 of their Java-based product as open source. Let's take a look at what they're offering and where it fits.

Web CMS outfit Clickability (news, site) adds an integrated development environment to allow customization and flexibility for its on-demand CMS product.

Underlining what it says is its commitment to open source communities and developers, Oracle (news, site) has just announced the release of a new enterprise pack consisting of a number of certified plug-ins that enable developers to build Java EE and Web Services applications for the Oracle Fusion Middleware platform.

The new Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse supports development with technologies including Database, Java SE, Java EE, Web Services, XML and the Spring Framework, and comes with a new feature called AppXRay, which allows Java developers to work in team settings and reduces run time debugging and code quality.

The bottom line, Oracle says, is that this new pack will provide for shorter, faster release cycles that better keep pace with the underlying open source Eclipse platform, or more simply put -- higher quality development in less time.

And the benefits? There are four main ones including:

• Enables WebLogic developers to combine their expertise in Eclipse with the capabilities of Oracle Fusion Middleware.
• It is enterprise ready and includes capabilities that enable the development, assembly, build, deployment, debugging and testing of Java SE, Java EE, Web Service, ORM and Spring applications.
• It plugs into your existing Eclipse app, preserving configuration and customization work.
• Supports multiple platform revisions.

A little Microsoft based development news to kick start your weekend. CollabNet, a provider of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) solutions, has just announced the second version of CollabNet Desktop—Visual Studio Edition.

First Microsoft's Interoperability Team announced a PHP Toolkit, then we saw Microsoft throw their support behind the CodePlex.org Foundation, and we hear rumors of a new open source content management system. So now what?

Well the Microsoft Interoperability Team has announced support for the open source IDE Eclipse. At the Eclipse Summit Europe, they offered up a few new solutions in partnership with open source companies Tasktop Technologies and Soyatec:

• An Enhanced Developer Experience for Eclipse on Windows 7
• Windows Azure Tools for Eclipse
• Windows Azure Software Developer Kit (SDK) for Java
• Eclipse Tools for Silverlight

Microsoft provides funding and architectural guidance on the projects.

According to Microsoft, the goal here is to "help developers using the Eclipse platform take advantage of the new features in Windows 7 and Window Server 2008 R2, and reinforce Java and PHP interoperability with Windows Azure and Microsoft Silverlight."

And while these projects sound interesting, there's another one underway that caught our attention: Microsoft has joined up with IBM, Zend Technologies, and others to work on a new open source, cloud interoperability project.

Called Simple API for Cloud Application Services, this project is designed to help create basic cloud applications that will run in all of the major cloud platforms. This would include the Amazon Web Services, even though Amazon is not part of the project. 

For many open source CMS developers -- be they PHP or Java coders -- the recent release of Eclipse Galileo (news, site) is good news. The Galileo version of the popular open source IDE offers an improved user experience and promises to lead to more efficient code and more modern code. Can you afford to stay away?

IBM (news, site) claims that EGL (Enterprise Generation Language) is the new COBOL, an easy to code business tool. But, we don't recall people giving COBOL compilers away for free back in the sixties.

Microsoft released Silverlight 2, a new version of its solution for creation and delivery of Rich Internet Applications (RIA’s) through a Web browser.

Silverlight 2 — presented under the motto of creating “next-generation Web experiences” — comes packed with a variety of new features and tools that enable designers and developers to better collaborate while creating more accessible and more secure user experiences.

It all started with the SweeTS - TypoScript Development. This first “real” development environment for TYPO3 and TypoScript was good, but not really an “enterprise” development tool. So three guys and a gal — Sebastian Böttger, David Brühlmeier, Eckhard M. Jäger (the creator of SweeTS) and Nina Meyer – got together and decided to build a truly enterprise SweeTS development environment based on Eclipse.
