Unveiled at the RSA Conference 2009 in San Francisco today, the combined solutions will secure critical information, identities and infrastructure, while at the same time ensuring full use and availability of your SharePoint platform.

Want to know how scalable EMC Documentum (news, site) really is? Well they wanted to show you. So they conducted a benchmarking study with Microsoft and HP to demonstrate just how well the enterprise content management solution would perform under pressure.

The results? You be the judge, but they look pretty impressive.

Global enterprise business solutions provider NEC is to enter into an alliance with one of India’s original IT garage start-ups, HCL, to extend the reach of EMC Documentum to Japan.

The recently announced partnership will result in the development a specific Japanese Document Management System, with NEC setting revenue targets of US$ 750 million (75 billion Yen) for the 2011 fiscal year with the new product.

A few years enterprise content management vendors were focused on eDiscovery as the predominant driver for building new solutions. And although that driver hasn't gone anywhere, it's not taking center stage these days.

At least not according to EMC (news,site). What's rising to the top of needs pile is IT efficiency -- such as storage and backup costs. So what has EMC done to help fill this new need without forgetting about the old one? They have created a new family of products and solutions called SourceOne. And it all starts with that blasted email we all hate to love.

If you are hanging out at the AIIM Conference the next few days, you are going to hear some interesting news and announcements from EMC (news, site). Along with some revealing research conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, sponsored by EMC, on the impact and importance of organizational agility, EMC is also announcing some new solutions designed to help customers work smarter.

No one will argue that we need technologies and solutions that help us pull together and share content and information from the various content repositories we have in our organizations today. Gone are the days of single repositories for everything. That's why companies are diving deep into the content connector market to provide solutions to integrate content between repositories.

That's also why CMIS is such a desired specification for the enterprise content management market. But will this new spec, expected to be out late spring for a public review, be the demise of the content connector market?

With over 30 bi-directional connectors to many of the most-used enterprise content management systems, EntropySoft is helping organizations easily integrate the various technologies they use for content-centric applications.

Their newest connector is the EMC Documentum eRoom connector. Designed for version 7.x of eRoom, the connector enables you to read and write content in the eRoom repository, including to objects such as forums, tasks and projects.

As with all connectors, the connector is non-intrusive and there are no installation requirements for the eRoom server.

The EntropySoft Connector factory also includes connectors for HP TRIM, Oracle UCM, IBM WebSphere Portal Document Manager and Interwoven WorkSite. Plug-and-play EntropySoft connectors include major applications such as Microsoft SharePoint, FileNET P8, Open Text LiveLink and Interwoven TeamSite.

All connectors are written in Java and are accessible via Java or .Net and web services.

The EntropySoft connectors are OEMed through a number of solutions and partners, including search vendors like Endeca, and most recently eDiscovery vendor Kazeon. The latest OEM partnership is with Image Integration Systems, provider of the DocuSphere BPI solution.

EMC Corporation -- an Enterprise CMS, and information management and infrastructure vendor -- announced that it expects an all-time quarterly revenue record for its Q4 2008. The preliminary results show expected revenue of approximately US$ 4 billion, which is approximately 8% revenue growth over Q3 2008, and 4% growth over the same period a year ago.

On the not-so-optimistic side, EMC also announced its plans to cut as many as 2,400 jobs, representing approximately 7% of its entire workforce.

Why would a highly-diversified Enterprise CMS technology corporation with licensing revenues in the billions of dollars be interested in a tiny company that specializes in support software for open source projects?

As good as EMC Documentum is at building an enterprise content management platform, the company leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to user interface design. If your problem is authoring XML content via Webtop -- Documentum's web-based GUI for accessing EMC Documentum repository -- JustSystems has a solution.

Enterprise level applications are not cheap. In particular, enterprise content management systems can send an organization's budget plans through the roof. Unless, of course, you are implementing an open source enterprise cms. So the story goes. 

According to open source enterprise content management (ECM) provider Alfresco, they are the alternative with a scalable, easy to use platform at a fraction of the price.

But the story of project costs is not just a tale of license price. There's a lot more money to spend implementing an Enterprise CMS. Let's take a closer look.

Are you tired of hearing of this draft CMIS thing yet? Content management software companies aren’t. No rest until everyone comes up with something CMIS-compliant. Most recently, EMC released an updated CMIS-compliant version of its Documentum ECM platform.

CMIS is still in the draft, pre-born stage, but everyone wants a piece of it. Reminds us of the SharePoint saga, only MOSS is already bearing lotsa $$$ behind it.

In CMIS case, it’s all about interoperability and inter-CMS-ial, inter-repositorial camaraderie. Kind of like an Enterprise CMS socialism.

It has been a little less than two months since the news of a proposed new enterprise content management standard hit the streets. The Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) spec, created jointly by Microsoft, IBM, EMC and a few other Enterprise CMS providers, was the talk of the town — for better or for worse.

But it’s been relatively quiet these days and we find that strange considering the importance of a standard like this to the industry. Maybe it’s not so important. Maybe it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. Maybe it’s simply a done deal and no one needs to say more…

EMC Document Sciences xPression 3 is a customer relationship management system (CRM) that automates the creation of customized and personalized business documents.
